I'm marking this read, but I only read 3 of the 4 books. OH and clear warning it says .5 is included in this omnibus, but it is not, instead it has 11 chapters from Steward of the Pack or maybe that's the whole novella which is said to be Lucy's POV of scenes from Glimmer of Deception.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed the first two books although I there is a lot that bothered me. The unfortunate thing is the writing doesn't get better and the inconsistencies and things that irk me just continued to grow in the third book. Everything is fast paced, there is no depth, and as much as I liked the characters I couldn't connect with them. Jinx is a Mary Sue, which is fine– I usually don't mind this– but she was so “unflappable.” Yes, it's cool she can roll with the punches, but dear stars I need a little bit more of a reaction when people hint you might be someone's mate. I also need SOME reaction to that or hell a reaction to being called someone's girlfriend without even knowing you were dating. Something, PLEASE.
I like the plot of these books, I mostly like the characters, even if she is surrounded by men. Seriously, we barely have women on adventures with her which makes Jinx seem even more like a pick me. Women are used as sounding boards, damsels in distress, and to help her look pretty, but only men are allowed into battle. Jinx literally goes to get new magic and barely learns how to use it instead of asking the woman to join her in the fight. Nope, women are only allowed in the background. Which is so stupid especially since Archie and Nate are practically the same character!
The writing just needs a little more oomph, more care, and beta reader checking for inconsistencies. And maybe time to flesh out things. Why wasn't Jinx at all curious about HOW Hes is Other now? How is she not MORE concerned about everything going on around her except the current case and even then she seems to have tunnel vision.
Also, time travel seems like such a cop out to me, I don't think it helped. That might just be me though since I nitpick the hell out of time travel. And this series hits on every single one of my peeves with it.
1. Objects in a loop with no origin outside of the time loop. How did it come into existence? Who created it? No one. She gave XX to him in the past and he gives it to her in the future, which she gives to him in the past, etc. etc.
2. People can only exist outside of their time for so long and yet Jinx brings XX from the past into the future... for it to stay forever. No big.
3.That whole deal with her not learning about the Other realm just waves hands all of THAT.
I'm so frustrated, because I really liked the plot. I enjoyed reading this and just wanted more, but the more I read the more ridiculous everything started to seem and I just... couldn't.
