I hate to be the dissenting voice in a sea of 4 and 5 star reviews, especially when I have enjoyed several of Lisa Henry's previous books, but this didn't work for me at all. The book was well-written and suspenseful, but there was nothing romantic for me in John and Caleb's relationship, and quite a bit that felt inappropriate. All of the reasons John gave in the beginning for why he shouldn't admit his feelings about Caleb? He should have paid more attention to them. It didn't help that there were numerous scenes that showed John taking care of Caleb like a child, which made the power imbalance more obvious. Plus none of the story is told from Caleb's POV so the reader never understands his hopes and dreams, other than to be with John.
I loved the secondary characters, namely John's family and colleagues, and my heart broke for Caleb both during the flashbacks and the scenes set in the present time. I appreciate the fact that there were no easy answers; John's love didn't magically cure Caleb of his PTSD and other symptoms. But I couldn't help feeling more uncomfortable than triumphant with the romance. I'm a social worker with a history of depression, so it's not that I don't think people with mental illness shouldn't find their happy endings. I just didn't find Caleb and John's pairing to be one I would champion.
