I think I first read these stories in the 1960s, in the three volumes from which this omnibus was assembled. My copy of the omnibus says “Reprinted 1974”, so I probably bought it in 1974 or soon afterwards; I've been dipping into it and rereading the stories ever since. It's an unusually good collection of 36 sf stories: they're not all wonderful, of course, but they're all quite readable, and I'm actively fond of about 15 of them.My favourites here are “Build Up Logically” (Howard Schoenfeld), “The Snowball Effect” (Katherine Maclean), “The First Men” (Howard Fast), “Pyramid” (Robert Abernathy), “The Wall Around the World” (Theodore Cogswell), “Protected Species” (H. B. Fyfe), “The Country of the Kind” (Damon Knight), “Common Time” (James Blish), and “Fulfilment” (A. E. van Vogt). There's also the very well known “Nightfall” (Isaac Asimov), which is readable and effective although not a personal favourite of mine.Unfortunately, Brian Aldiss revisited this collection and reissued it in 2007 (see [b:A Science Fiction Omnibus 2271206 A Science Fiction Omnibus Brian W. Aldiss https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1458081817l/2271206.SY75.jpg 888166]), deleting 15 stories and replacing them with 10 new ones. I say “unfortunately” because he chose to delete some of the stories that I like; whereas I don't particularly like any of the new ones. Thus, I have to hang on to my battered old 1974 copy of this omnibus.
