The purpose of this book is to give emphasis to the pioneering emigrants who left the United Kingdom in the years before 1850 and braved the hardships and often the dangers of those times to settle in the country of their choice or to which they had been directed. Although it may have particular interest to family history readers in the Yorkshire and the Dales, the book briefly tells the story of the considerable emigration from Scotland, the departure of some 4,000 men, women and children to South Africa in 1820 and the historically important and extended exodus of convicts to Australia.
