Didn't expect I'd enjoy it but I did, starting about halfway through and so I'm glad I pushed through this heck of a large book.
One thing I personally liked is the female dominance in the book. Not to sound like a pretentious feminist but it's definitely a refreshing concept and reminded me of Monstress. I think the female characters weren't defined and portrayed by the sexuality but rather complemented their personalities and roles in the epic story. It didn't feel like “girls are so badass” like what most say about books that portray a female main character.
Unsure of this is classified as a YA or adult fantasy but it definitely lays more on YA based on comprehension and simplicity of the setting. There's a basic concept of the world-building: there's the east, west, and south as the main domains in action and that's it. I wish it could've been more complex than just labelling the directions but it suited well enough.
Overall, it was a fairly enjoyable read and I might just buy the book itself (since I just borrowed an ebook from on online library) to reread and support the author. I'm definitely lookong forward to trying out Bone Season, another book series of the same author.
