Brokenhearted, still mourning the loss of her husband, Heidi travels with her son Abbott and her niece Charlotte to spend the summer repairing their family home in a small village in the south of France. There, thousands of miles from home, Charlotte makes a shocking confession, and Heidi learns the truth about her mother's "lost summer."

If you are still working on a list of books you want to acquire for beach reading, I'd not hesitate to recommend this book for that list. Heidi sets off for Provence on a mission for her mother to repair damage to an old family home there. Heidi's husband was killed a year earlier and she can't shake her sadness at her loss. Along with Heidi are her troubled teenage niece and her obsessive-compulsive young son.
You will be able to anticipate much of this story (not to give too much away, but you know Heidi will be meeting a handsome yet equally troubled Frenchman, right?) but it has a nice freshness combined with predictability that we love in our summer reads.
