Why?

Well, there were a couple of reasons - and not all was this book's fault. (AKA: my borrow was about to expire and I just got a gaming capable computer for the first time in almost two years so I doubted I'd get the book finished even if I renewed it.)

But, at least one was the book's fault.

I didn't like the writing style. Not the main part of it. The writing there was nice and serviceable. No, we had to have the conceit of one of the girls being the ‘author' of the book and allowing her friends to look over the manuscript when she was done and then deciding to leave in all their remarks in. Even the tangents where they would be talking about one thing and then interrupt talk about something only slightly related.

By the time we got back to the story, the pace had been interrupted to such a degree that I sometimes wasn't sure what we were even doing and I had to look back to the last actual ‘story' part of the book. (Much like conversations that get interrupted by a whole bunch of internal thoughts and when the question is (finally) answered, I can't recall what the conversation was.)
