Lady Ebony Moffat panics when her castle is over run with reivers and her father in law lay injured. Sir Alex Somers and his men were going to take her precious son, Sam, as a hostage.
She fears for her son being apart from her and offers herself up to Sir Alex if he will allow her to stay with Sam. He accepts her offer. She don't realize they are on the King's orders and not common thieves.
After her father in law dies from his injuries she and Meg fight tooth and nail away from the two men in charge of their lives. Sam takes to Sir Alex and his men who take time to teach him manly things, which Ebony feels a six year old need not be learning.
The battle of the wills go on and on through this book. Both with Meg and Sir Hugh and Ebony and Sir Alex.
