I just finished The Woman at the wheel by Penny Haw
Bertha was born in the wrong year. She was always fascinated by her fathers work and the idea of being a girl didn't concern her until she saw what her father had to say about it froze her heart.
When Bertha meets Carl Benz and they fall in love, his crazy dream of a horseless carriage is one of the things she loves most about him. Reaching for the impossible. As his partners withdraw their support for his work and Carl is ready to cut ties from them too, Bertha knows this is a mistake and she goes against her husband's wishes and finds a way to bring the horseless carriage to fruition.
I actually had no idea she was a real person until my husband mentioned it and I went searching. This book was very well researched and I loved how the author brought Bertha to life. She really was the most incredible person. I felt the character development was brilliant. I love how eccentric Carl was and his ideas were so big!
I couldn't imagine being limited as a woman was back then but she didn't let it stop her. The pace was as you would expect with historical fiction, steady and fairly slow but the world that was built on each page was well worth it.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves hardcore women in history!
4 stars!
