There are watchers who have been on the job of observing Earth and its humans for a very long time working in rotating shifts. Three of them man an infallible saucer...which despite everything, does indeed fail and forces its occupants to very hurriedly abandon ship - and act that causes all three of them to be severely injured - or at least their human appearing bodies worn as a disguise to be hurt. This story deals with them and the humans who help them. A very well written book - of course, with Robert Silverberg, that's something that is not unusual. gmb 4/27/2020
