“Always stand true to your word, son, and you'll never have reason to hang your head in shame.”
That quote from this novella stood out to me for its truth. It was neat to see how Bernie lived out that instruction from his father throughout his romance with Helen.
It was also wonderful to see how Helen gave up her dreams to raise her siblings upon her parents' deaths. What sacrifice! I, for one, love stories about the eldest sibling raising the younger in such circumstances.
The patriotism infused into this novella made my heart soar. That instinct to defend one's country against attack (foreign and domestic) is what true patriotism is all about. I loved how well the author showed this in such a short amount of pages.
The cover didn't really match the story, as the cover seems summery, but the story is set in autumn and winter. However, I loved this story and would gladly read it again.
