An optogenetics PhD student researching addiction reflects back on her Ghanaian family's upbringing in Alabama, her brother's opioid addiction and her mother's subsequent depression. She works through her past and tries to compromise her religious upbringing with her scientific beliefs. Or maybe it's the fact that there are simply too many US-set immigrant stories out there already. It gives it a well-trodden path feel, even though the writing is great and the characters are compelling. 3.5
