4/5 - I would have to say that the first 3 chapters of this book were the most triggering words I've ever read. It was to the point to where I decided to DNF the book. I hated doing it because as triggering as those chapters were, they were so well written. After a couple of days, I decided to jump back in and see how this all played out and I am quite glad I did. There were still triggering moments that occurred, but Zoey Ellis may be my favorite FMC that I've ever read. It was so sad to see her have to stay strong throughout her disgusting ordeals (plural...smh) and no one has her back, including her mother and friends. She navigated through those treacherous waters alone, but she did it so well. I rooted for her the entire time because of how she always stood up for herself. She was the ONLY reason why this book received the rating it did because her internal dialogue was great! Zoey proved to be very mature for her 17 years. I don't know if I would've been that brave had that happened to me.
I understand people want to praise Carter Mahoney as he tried to undo his wrongs towards the end, but what he did at the beginning and throughout the book is unforgivable in my eyes. I still don't feel like he was remorseful for what he did to Zoey, as most times he would throw the encounter back in her face like she was in the wrong. Carter was a full blown sadistic, manipulative psychopath who needed to be in prison!! He's a true Supreme Court justice in the making! Like I said, he attempted to right his wrongs towards the end, but that was the LEAST he could've done for Zoey after torturing her for months. I was unmoved by his acts of kindness. All in all, if you can stomach what occurred at the beginning of the book, then you should finish the book because it was well written.
