The Circle Trilogy was my first introduction to Ted Dekker back in 2004 when Black was published. The story caught my attention right away. More, the ideas in this trilogy caught my attention. I like a good story, but I am ultimately motivated by ideas that impact how I see and live life.
Here in White, Dekker illustrates God's incomprehensible love for His people once again. We see how religion fails to be a complete expression of God's love, even when it is designed to point to it. My favorite illustration is how Dekker shows that regardless of who we are, where we are, what we look like, or how we behave, God knows us completely and loves us completely, wanting more than anything to have a real relationship with us.
Many have pointed out how this isn't a perfect allegory and that straight parallels create theological problems. This is true, but I would argue that this story isn't intended to be a straight up perfect allegory.
Dekker's writing is very much story driven, so those who are looking for deep character development and character growth will not find what they are looking for.
I give this five stars because it is a story that gets me to thinking and seeing life in a deeper way. For me, that is the best kind of book.
