Odd little book. It made a sad point about how “ministering to the heathen” generally is taken to mean the ones from other countries and the ones in the fancy homes and forgotten slums are near at hand, then highlighted some of the work going on in the slums and the lack in more prosperous circles. The author was glad to speak up for Jews and also hoped that the war would have a purifying influence on her nation as the idle rich had to confront mortality.

It's set in the early days of WW2, from the invasion of Poland to the Battle of Britain. I did find it interesting to read about some of the early days of the war effort and yet some of the story threads felt a little unfinished because of it being published during the war.
