OK, this book really didn't grab me. It was written in a fairly common style - revisiting he route of earlier travellers - in this case three missionary women (Milred Cable, Francesca & Eva French) through China (primarily in Qinghai, Gansu & Xinjiang), and adding contemporary experiences to those of the original travellers.
I don't know. It just wasn't gripping. I also have very little empathy for missionaries, or ex evangelist Christians trying to find their way. I also found it really annoying that despite the name of the book, the author doesn't follow the original route into the Gobi proper - into the Inner Mongolia province of China, which was what I was expecting.
