Your Throne

It's unfortunate that I'm rating this webtoon 2.5 stars, because it's not particularly bad, but it just did not click with me.

Firstly, the storytelling felt unnecessarily convoluted. There was a constant back and forth between alternating character perspectives, but it was placed very suddenly without any forethought. There were also moments where characters would have these drawn-out internal monologues, which just felt very contrived and info-dumpy. Also, the characters' dialogues felt overly...polished and pristine? I understand that in books/comics, it is not ideal to write dialogue that is exactly identical to human speech, since humans stutter, pause, and/or don't always say the wittiest and most charismatic lines, therefore reading hyper-realistic dialogues in stories wouldn't exactly be very enjoyable. However, here the dialogues were tweaked to the point where everyone would use words that would be outside of the average person's normal, causally spoken vocabulary. The dialogues were just too perfect for me to buy into the fact that real people would have said any of the things spoken.

Aside from this, the characters felt very manufactured. I usually tend to be to rely more on the plot with stories like this, so when there are flaws in the characterization in a story, I tend to be quite good at overlooking them (as long as the story itself isn't meant to be solely character-driven). But here, the way the characters acted felt like they were muppets being controlled, who would suddenly do things that were meant to be a part of their perceived ‘personality'—they were lacking any form of consistent personality, and it made everything seem too manufactured and deliberate. Basically, it felt like the plot dictated their personality at any given moment, which is not a good thing in terms of having well fleshed our characters.

The plot itself was okay, which is where most of my rating comes from, but honestly, the plot isn't good enough to make me overlook all the aforementioned points and continue on with this ongoing webtoon. I do believe a lot of people would enjoy ‘Your Throne,' but it was sadly just not for me :(
