Somewhat formulaic in writing style and structure, although some of this may be due to translation issues! I found it quite heavy going and not particularly light hearted, with multiple failed suicides.
The ending felt shoe horned and rushed, as if the editor had asked for a happier ending and Fredrik Backman just blasted it out in an afternoon.
That said, I was clearly invested enough to become upset reading it and I would say that I am glad to have read it overall.
I originally thought this was a Sci-Fi book, as that is what I know Adrian Tchaikovsky for. Once I realised space ships wouldn't be showing up, I got into the fantasy book proper and was pleasantly surprised!
The book tells an interesting and refreshingly unique (to me) story of a fractured town, with a more minimal focus on the magic and fantasy of the world and more focus on the characters and the social goings on of a oppressed city on the point of revolution.
Thoroughly enjoyed! I would probably give it 4.5 if I could, but it was certainly closer to a 5* book than a 4.
