I spent a lot of time in revivals growing up in rural Southern Missouri. Ms. West captures the essence of the evangelical movement and the particular religious fervor engendered by ecstatic experiences and psychological manipulation. She also catches the violence, jealousy, and turf guarding that is often acted out by “God's people”.
This is a good read, but it definitely is not pleasant.
I use the library a lot but this is one that I'm going to buy. This book is not your average journal writing book but seems to touch a deep place in me which is weird since it has an odd blend of Christianity and New Age thought going on. Who knows why some things speak to us but there's much more that I can learn and apply from this author's writing.
I had been finding myself leaning in to vegetarianism and veganism more and more and have been eating less and less meat as a general rule. So far I've let beef and chicken behind and most pork products. Still eating some bacon on occasion. But this is convincing me to let that as well as eggs go also. I'm afraid the hard one for me is going to be cheese. Having grown up on a farm and been in close contact with killing animals both domestic and wild I am feeling better by no longer subsisting on flesh. I'm feeling better about myself and the impact of how much one person stopping eating meat can make. Admittedly this is high summer and we have all the fresh fruits and veggies so we'll see how it goes when winter comes along.
This book is a great re-enforcer and as Ms. Freston says and I alluded to in my first sentence try “leaning in” to the vegan lifestyle. I think we will all be better for it.
I don't like business fables and this is a business fable.
However I do like this book. It gives practical, commonsense advice that is actionable and doable. There are a couple of the seven levers that I had to go back and read again to get the concept. That may have just been my lack of understanding though. Overall there are some good curated ideas that can help you in your business if you are just starting out or if you need some reinforcement.
I don't like fables. I do recommend this book though!
When I started this book my thought was, “no way is this going to work.” THEN when I came to the heel - which I just mis-typed as Hell - I was really thinking, “This is never going to work.” BUT...I kept following the instructions and the very well done photographs and voila - I now have a pair of freaking lime green socks that fit my size 14 feet (for those of you who don't know me - no, I'm not an Amazonian woman but a guy who has taken up knitting as self-defense - I like to think of circular needles as stylized nun-chucks - but I digress). The subtle color choice should go well with my executive power suits.
Thanks to the author for her extremely well done book.
I know Alice Walker is an icon and a national treasure and for me this book for the most part was enjoyable. However there are times that I feel an author, especially popular authors, throw some “stuff” together just to see if people will actually buy it.
Mostly semi-entertaining essays about the chickens she keeps on her 40 acre farm north of San Francisco and the spiritual/metaphysical knowledge and joy she receives from them. However there is an oddly out of place paen to Michael Jackson after his death right in the middle of the metaphorical chicken pen - somehow my mind can't reconcile the whole schmeer.
