This author is always hit or miss for me. I found The Other Emily in a used bookstore on vacation and decided to give it a read. I was happily surprised.
It is dark, tragic and at times suspenseful. The how behind it all was decent too. Overall, a pretty quick and interesting read. This would be good for Spooktober for those who enjoy weird and a little spooky.

Aphrodite and Ares are trapped...and Aphrodite's husband Hephaestus is to blame. Stuck in a golden net they cannot escape, Aphrodite asks Hephaestus to allow her to plead her case as to why she is having an affair with Ares. Against his better judgment, Hephaestus agrees. And so begins a tale...of love, war, devastation, friendships and HOPE.
As the story is told, Aphrodite calls witnesses to her tale and so Apollo and Hades make an appearance on her behalf. Why exactly is the love story between James and Hazel so important? How does the love between Aubrey and Collette prove Aphrodite's work is meaningful? Can she prove, through their stories, that she isn't some flighty floozy? Is there some deeper meaning behind why Aphrodite is even having an affair?
OH MAN! What a treat this was to get absolutely lost in. This isn't a small book and I devoured it! It's Historical Fiction with a smattering of Mythology and it couldn't have been more perfect for me. This one had me all over the place with emotions but then the best books do that. I did not want this one to end.
If you are looking for a book that will have you lost in love, crying out in despair, falling to your knees (so-to-speak) in agony, and eventually becoming lifted high on hope ... Go Grab This – “...though War is a formidable force, it's no match for the transcendent power of Love”

There is a reason this author is one of my favorites. His writing is so flawless and makes reading a delight.
Have you ever wondered what goes on in your neighborhood at night? When doors close and people settle in for the night. When the world becomes a mysterious place, and all sorts of weird and odd happenings commence. In the morning there are remnants of things gone by which tickle the imagination and neighbor nosiness.
I love how quirky the two main characters are and how their friendship just...is. You have to read this to understand what I mean by that. I want a neighbor like this LOL. Big Dave is eccentric and he's loveable and frustrating at the same time. I get major Kramer vibes from him and I LOVED it. His counterpart, Seff, is a writer and is more logical and rational in his behavior. It makes for an interesting and fun dynamic.
The little mysteries that surround their neighborhood gave me pause and had me wondering what goes on around me at night. This was the most enjoyable part for me and added so much to the book overall.
I absolutely love the format with the different stories that surround and connect the main one with Big Dave and Seff. It flowed well and made for a fast read.
Keep an eye out for this one. It releases on March 4, 2025 and is well worth the snag. I sincerely appreciate Scott Semegran for the review copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

I have read a couple of books by this author so when I was perusing a used bookstore on vacation, I snapped this up. I am glad I did. I read this in a day and man what a thrilling read.

As always, I read through this one fast. When it comes to this series, there hasn't been anything I don't love. The Devil's Advocate is dark, gritty and kept me on my toes.
There are a couple of times I was caught completely off guard. One of the main reasons I love this author. This starts off hot and just kept on going.
If you are a fan of thrillers, court drama, and page-turning suspense...grab this one! And then go back and read the rest of the series. You won't be disappointed.
I sincerely appreciate the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.

I read the second book in this series and decided that I needed to read Watch Your Back while I'm waiting for my library to have the first book in the series available. Thank goodness you can read these out of order LOL
The pages kept flying by as I read, needing to see what was going to happen next. Really enjoyed the storyline on this one! I seriously thought I knew where this one was going, and then when I got to the big reveal was shocked. I did have an inkling about one part of it, but the other twist wasn't expected. Had fun with this one.
Another fast-paced, thrilling read. Good one for fans of domestic suspense and crime fiction.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this one and ended up being pleasantly surprised. I didn't realize this would have supernatural elements and I was here for it.
I enjoyed the story a lot. I don’t dive (and never will), but the descriptions made me wish I was a little more adventurous—though I’ll probably stick to watching documentaries from the safety of my couch 😂.
The characters are good too and I was invested in the outcome. I read this one quickly as I had a hard time putting it down. This would make a good beach read if you like spookier stories while enjoying some sunshine.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.

Whenever this author comes out with a new book I'm all over it. Not only do I get a good, spooky story, I also get some extra fun stuff throughout the book.
I will not post what the fun items are because that would ruin it for other readers. I will say pay close attention to details when reading, maybe grab a magnifying glass, and you'll find plenty of hidden surprises. For me this always enhances the book and I have such a blast.
One of my favorite settings for a horror book is old buildings. Churches are at the top of that list because there is so much history within those walls. Pair that with the church also being the home for the main characters and voila .. happy book nerd.
I also enjoyed the garage sale aspect, the ghost, and how it all ties together. The journey along the way is chaotic, full of creep factor and perfect for Spooktober. Ghost From a Yard Sale easily lived up to my expectations. Grab this one for your Spooktober reading and enjoy!!

When I first read the premise of this book, I was very interested. I love stories that play with time, and when done well, time loops can make for an exciting read. Unfortunately, this one didn’t work for me.
The biggest hurdle was how it’s marketed as YA. I don't feel like it belongs in this genre. The recurring focus on teens, sex, Swedish Fish, and Mr. Rogers with Lady Elaine quickly became more irritating than entertaining.
Beyond that, the story itself felt directionless and, honestly, pretty boring. I struggled to stay engaged and almost DNF’d several times. While I’m grateful to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this, it’s not a book I’ll be recommending.

This is a fast-paced, gripping mystery. I finished this in two days because I had such a hard time putting this down. I would think I knew where it was going, only for something else to pop up and surprise me. I had an inkling in the beginning, and thought I knew who was ultimately behind it all. I kept going back and forth because of the unfolding story. Turns out my first instinct was correct. Man this was fun to read.

The Swans of Harlem by Karen Valby is a moving read. I'm not a huge fan of ballets, but have seen a few shows. I am always in awe of the beautiful and gracefulness of the dancers.
This book gives long-overdue recognition to five ballerinas who helped shape the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Their stories are both inspiring and heartbreaking. The sacrifices these ladies made is nothing short of amazing.
Knowing nothing of these women beforehand, the author's writing makes it easy to really get a feel for who they are and what they went through. At times the narrative jumps around a bit, but overall it’s a beautiful and necessary celebration of talent and legacy that deserves to be remembered.
I sincerely appreciate the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.

Well OK then!!! This is definitely an easy 2021 favorite and the easiest 5⭐s to give. That's the most FUN I've had reading in a while. I wasn't just immersed in the story...I was involved! I forgot where I was and what time it was. I “woke” up from the book and literally hours had passed. Sorry not sorry
