Tender Is the Flesh

I loved how it set the scene for the new industry still set in a world that could very easily be ours, then fully went on ahead and painted a very specific scenario. Best speculative fiction I've read this year.

If you like books that pretty much ask what would happen if you just change *one specific thing* about our current society, and how it would all play out with people being as they are... then this is for you.

Made me experience child-like wonder again.

I thought it would be intimidating to be thrust into a whole new universe. The book opens up and talks about distinct characteristics of the universe as if the reader already knows what all these things about. It's a nice mental exercise to figure out more about the universe and the specific story at the same time. Like there are plans within plans in the story, there's discoveries within discoveries set for the reader.

I first read it as a young teen, and back then the writing style was OK - it was easily digestible and entertaining. Hence the relatively high rating I gave it.

After rereading it as an adult, I can't believe I was allowed to read something like this as a child haha. It sets for bad role models. But it is still one of my comfort reads. It's nice and nostalgic to go back to my cringe era.

Vague spoilers (about the tone of the ending) ahead!!!

It was a nice ride going in from the first book, but the way things got resolved near the end seems... too convenient? The resolution didn't match the build up and the pay off seems lacking.
