This book really deserves 5 stars. It earned 5 stars.

But I must say that I disliked reading parts of it too much to give it 5 stars, which I really think was it's intent, to be a little hard to read.

Very good book, obviously well written.

As far as brain candy goes this was not good.

I'm willing to give the author another chance, but it is quite regrettable that this was the first book of hers I read...

Good story, good plot, good characters, good pace, but nothing very new or special. If you like the genre, you'll like the book, though maybe not love it.

Beautiful story.
After my last book, this is exactly what I needed to pull me back to female-led fantasy epics.

Yup, I'm done. That was squicky. I could have gone without any of that.

I was right when I reviewed at the half way point. The oversexualization didn't improve. The disturbing relationship between the main guy and the 12 year old girl didn't improve. The violence against children got worse and the Mary Sue ness of the young girl was sustained. Will not continue the series.

I'm not going to lie, I love everything about this little book.
As a former Summer Camp counselor I can attest that it is a 100% accurate depiction.

This book is not terrible in itself, it's just too similar to every other book in the genre... so if you read those and want more of the same...

It took a couple issues to get in to, but I really enjoyed it once I had adjusted.

Um, what can I say about this book.... it was pretty fantastic, with each ‘ending' building in Shyamalanian suspense... highly recommended!

Well what can I say... this book was not good...

I gave it one extra star for the cover.

The characters are unconvincing in a very fundamental way, the plot is unbelievable, and the protagonist leaves one ultimately confused by her muddled portrayal of a “World Class Assassin”. (At one point one member of the love-triangle [or square? I was never quite sure] asked the land's most deadly assassin if she was okay after having SEEN a dead body... and neither of the characters recognized how empirically stupid that was...)

So no, don't read this book... I know, I can hear you... that cover is really cool... but trust me...

Really really liked this book! Looking forward to exploring more of Hobbs work.

Just finished book 1, incredibly moving and beautiful.. sometimes the slightest bit hard to follow, but overall amazing.

Update: after finishing the series (what is currently up) I am adding the last star based on the heart-feel and longing for more.

Much good, a wonderful tale of a teenage girl, wonderful read.

A wonderful romp! Highly recommend to fans of Carriger... and even if you aren't a fan just yet.

Didn't quite live up to the other two in terms of historical interest, but it was entertaining all the same.

This book was really beautiful, but the story felt rushed and expositional.... still lovely though, enjoyed it either way.

Sorry, I know many of you love this collection, but I just can't connect with it... I couldn't read the first volume so it was suggested that I skip to this one. But I'm just not FEELing it. Intellectually I understand that it is GOOD, I recognize it's value in the world but... it just isn't for me.

And maybe I'm just coming off of reading a couple comics I really really connected with, heart and mind, and this just didn't live up to that....
