It takes true talent to so quickly provoke such strong feelings from me for two characters right from the beginning of a book. Their love is so pure, and their story brought tears to my eyes several times. They have very different personalities, but they fit together perfectly, and I love them both so much.
While this was good, I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped because of just how submissive Finley is. I like it when they're more spunky and rebellious with more push and pull. Also, literally everything makes him cry and that was just too much. The kink was hot though, and I'll probably want to read the next book.
First 75% was 4 stars for me, then the book was ruined, with the last 25% being a 1 star read. The twist was a total cop-out, lazy, and didn't even make sense. And yes, author, I “get it” and I'm still very disappointed. If you're going to write a dark book with fucked up characters and twisted love, commit to it. Don't chicken out with a “twist” that makes it all sunshine and rainbows and instalove sap fest romance that's not in the least believable. It introduced a major plot hole that wasn't explained in the author's note at the end where she tried to cover other plot holes but missed the biggest one. I saw all the twists coming a mile away, including the big one, except that I dismissed it because there were too many reasons it didn't make sense, yet that's still what she went with, then tells the reader they shouldn't be disappointed.
2.5 stars
Bit too on the sappy side. I found it hard to imagine men actually having these conversations. Also, the journal read nothing like one. It was really just a mini 1st person POV historical m/m romance book masquerading as a journal, so it was completely not believable, and even less believable that the MCs would read it to one another as if it were simply a journal.
I love slave fics with strong willed uncooperative slaves, and Wyl most certainly fit the bill! I thought the language barrier was a great way to explain the misunderstandings and conflict between him and Lysander, but Wyl's lightning quick mastery of the language during one part of the book was quite difficult to believe. Overall, a great story that I very much enjoyed.
I honestly did not expect to like this based on the blurb, but I love being proven wrong on that! I generally reserve my 5 star ratings for books that can make my cold dead heart feel, and this one managed it! Tears welled up multiple times, and I probably would have cried had I been alone. My heart was in my throat for so much of this book. I really felt for both of these men and what they went through to get to each other again. The whole reincarnation thing was a bit weird since it wasn't anything like the typical idea of reincarnation, as Neil had the same name, same body, and most of his memories from the time he was born. Anyway, I just went with the flow and accepted the story for what it was, and truly enjoyed the experience.
This was the most successful and enjoyable BR I've ever done, thanks to our stopping ourselves at a critical point and theorizing on everything we could think of, voicing all our thoughts and FEARS and agonizing over a certain SOMETHING. And then this book fucking DELIVERED, like it was written just for me, and I am so grateful and happy! Wiltshire continues to bring out the heavy feels, and I just fall deeper in love with these men the more I read. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Really enjoyed this one, and am looking forward to the rest of the series. It reminded me a lot of Jex Lane's [b:Captive 31359082 Captive (Beautiful Monsters #1) Jex Lane https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1470461606l/31359082.SY75.jpg 51425133], and I find myself similarly intrigued about the MC's parentage. I have my theories, of course.
Started out hot but then went downhill. So much of it was not believable and too ridiculous, corny, etc. The situation between Conor and Wells became too disturbing beyond a certain point. And I don't know why, but instalove is showing up in way too many books I've been reading lately! I hate it so much.
