This was an enjoyable book, but not my favorite. The characters were interesting, but often were so far out it felt like reading about a foreign tribe in Net Geo.
The back of the book had me thinking this was a mystery, but it turned out to be more of a thriller. I think I would have enjoyed it slightly more if I hadn't started under this that misconception.
I don't know if I was reading a different book than everyone else, or what.
Positives: It was a fairly quick read. Which was probably the only thing that kept me from Lemming it.
Negatives:
The main character - was not someone I could get behind. This may just be me, as I can be a tom-boy sometimes, but her fussing over clothes and nails was totally lost on me. She was also a strange combination of whiney and get-along-go-along (by that I mean she was willing to just blase go along without any answers).
The side characters - were totally unlikable. I wanted to like Jericho, but there was never a thaw in his rude behavior. As for the other characters, the author barely brush pasted them and the attention they get showed them in a very negative/annoying light.
The world building - was not there. Having Jericho be so aloof with his answers means that I know more about Mac's fashion sense than the world.
The writing - felt very repetitive and time-skip narration was a total distraction.
Oh well, turns out I am in the minority disliking this book, but to each his/her own.
I really liked this book. The pattern of the story felt more like the first book in the series, Rosemary & Rue. Toby was much more likeable in this book than the first. It was also nice to get SOME answers to a few of the questions floating around in the series. That led of course to more questions, but it was still very satisfying.
I liked the world and the characters, but the “mystery” was really lacking for me here.
There were some characters I wished I could have seen more of, but what can you do. Here side kick (sorry don't remember how to spell his name) was an enjoyable character.
The major mysteries of the book were pretty annoying though. Maybe I just read too many mysteries, but I figured it out pretty quick. After that it was like when you watch a horror movie and you tell at the screen, “don't go on the house! How do you not know he is the murderer!”.
I enjoyed this book and the world. I enjoy stories of the far end look forward to delving into it further with the series.
I almost gave this a 3 star do to the number of questions I had that were just brushed by about the workings of the world. I gave it the benefit of the doubt (and the 4th star) because this is a long series and I hope these issues are addressed in later books.
Toby was an interesting character reaching maturity (well after she became and ‘adult') and I look forward to following more of her journey.
This was a great mystery that led you right to the bad guys, then distracted you away, so when you finally discovered “who done it” you were shocked & had them as a suspect. I also really liked that Bosch was somehow both really vulnerable and a complete asshole. (Side Note: It seems like everyone was a jerk by today's standards, just looking at the smoking and littering!) Enjoyed it and just bought the 2nd in the series.
As a child the tv movies (PBS) were on of my favorite shows. Anne Shirley was amazing.
The book did not disappoint. I loved reading Anna's fast paced dialogue and could easly picture the exuberance of a child coming off the pages. The turn of a century quaint town of Avilon was so diferent from modern life, in the most interesting ways.
Can't wait to read more of the beloved stories of Anne as she grows up.
Side note: I tried to listen to the audio book for a couple chapters in the middle. It was horrid (there are several so maybe it was only his narrator). The were slow and concise and sounded nothing like a on excitable little girl. Keep to the written book on this one.
I greatly enjoyed this spanning tale. It had wonderful intrigue and some great plot twist. Several times I was greatly surprised (in the best way) at how a scene turned.
I must admit it skimmed a couple of the fight scenes that were full of flourish.
I will definitely be checking out more of his works and I look forward to see what the future brings in this world.
I really am about a 3.5 stars on this book, but with that not a option it was more or a 4 star (than 3 star book).
This book had me a little longer than the last one. It took me til the second murder to figure out ‘who done it.' It was definitely a fun read and I enjoyed the interplay between the characters. I will be reading more of these books in the future.
I really don't know how to review this without sounding cliche. Well first I loved it. I laughed, out loud, especially during the first chapters. I nodded along at some of the growing up moments and read in awe in others. I cried in some of the later chapters, for her honest and the personal realisations they helped me with in my life. This is a memoir I think I will be still learning from in years to come.
Let's get some of the great motto coffee cups out there!
Modesitt did not let me down. I enjoyed reading this tale of magic, military strategy, and growing up. If there had been more of a romantic connection I would have probably given it 5 stars (guess I will have to read the next one for that).
The illusions he made to what we (the reader) know Hamor with become was interesting. Like all of the Recluse books this was very morally thought provoking.
