Finding My Way: A Memoir

Wrote a review for

It is a very honest book and hence, I don't think I will like Malala as a friend. But also I don't understand books that includes text bubbles...like why do you even include your text messages?? especially they are chats between your college friends... Well I guess this book is just full of sides of her that I didn't care about but they are undoubtedly an important part of her life.

Mother Mary Comes to Me

Absolutely beautiful. I have been in a mentally ill book spiral recently and tbh I was quite disappointed in the writing quality. But this one is absolutely beautiful. You feel the tenderness and strength of the author. She also has a good sense of humour.

Nobody's Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice

Wrote a review for

not a writer. I guess there is no way you could write a good memoir if you were Epstein's victim. Too much spotlight around this. But tbh I don't know how to articulate it but I don't think I would like to be around her. I feel like she is a bit too focus on herself. I guess maybe I just don't like the writing, too thin and pale. (I do feel like a bad person for saying this. But I think I should be honest.)

Interesting stories. Not much to comment on regarding writing.

All the Way to the River: Love, Loss, and Liberation

Wrote a review for

So CRINGE. She is so obsessed with herself. She is like a highschool girl. Nothing new in this book. Sometimes I feel like she even has some grammar mistake, which is just odd. I have no idea how her editor(s) allows this thing to be published.

Be Ready When the Luck Happens

Wrote a review for

Classic life of rich white people. I am not saying that she didn't work hard for what she got but the whole book just stinks white people privilege. She has a rich family to allow her do what she wants and do stuff without considering consequence. Tho she said she never gave herself enough credit and thought her accomplishment is due to luck, well..it is. It is a fun read having a peak into what rich white people's lives are like but people really shouldn't realistically view it as an example to follow.

Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection

Interesting but not fascinating. But what can I say (shrug), I like John Green as a person. But one thing he mentioned in the book does stay with me: how people have long been viewing mental illness as an illness of willingness, an illness of personality but not something medical.

My Friends

Wrote a review for

He used to be one of my favorite author. But somehow I don't really like this book that much. From the plot to the writing. Maybe I have become more cynical. Every detail that is supposed to be emotionally moving just read like a cliche to me. Like the kind of exaggeration from a teenager. Makes an ounce of sadness like an ocean that can drown them.

The writing is also so typical Fredrik Backman. I enjoyed very much his type of writing and was amazed the first time I read his book. But now its just "old" to me, like nothing new...I can sense that he wrote this book 100 miles away. But I guess that's also why it is called a "style". Plot is cliche.

But like I said, maybe I just wasn't in the right mindset when I was reading it...too cynical.

The Things They Carried

I read this because Kilian (Cornell machine learning guy whose youtube I watched to learn ML) said on his website that it is one of his favourite and I like Kilian. It is a good book. Not too emotional but also not lack of insights.

Sociopath: A Memoir

Wrote a review for

Cannot help feeling the author is very obsessed with herself. This has nothing to do with author being "apathetic", genuinely does not sound like a pleasant person to be around with. But definitely a honest book..since she sounds like a terrible person (tho maybe she doesn't realize that's why she can be so honest in her writing). Not much insightful tbh.. "Hmmm...OK." is my reaction through entire book.

Very obviously written by a journalist. Not moved by the story at all. Still have no sympathy for Chris.

Interesting story. But when it comes to writing, all I can say is that journalists should just stick with reporting news. (The author being journalist explains the writing of the book.)

Educated: A Memoir

Wrote a review for

Nothing beats a good story. I can't say much about the writing but I think the content itself is intriguing enough. Tho I have to admit that it was my third attempt, I gave up quite quickly at my first two tries, which I think is due to my lack of knowledge of Mormonism. I remember when I first read it....I was just simply couldn't understand it ...I mean I literally did not understand it...since the world it describes is too peculiar to me ..I was like..."this book doesn't make sense".

My Dark Vanessa

Great description of complicated emotions when it comes to sexual crime victims. It captures the tiniest, the most subtle feelings. A book makes me ponder and it reveals a lot of emotions surrounding sexual crime victims that I never really thought of.
