The first 50% was an uphill battle - some parts were interesting and most slow moving. Without my sister's encouragement that it gets better 1/2 way thru I would have stopped reading. I love the last half of the book and read that very quickly (took me 1 1/2 week to get thru the first 1/2 and 2 days to get thru the second).
I agree with the review by Bob Milne - I loved the first 2/3 of the book. the last few Pendergast books were OK but this reminded me of the earlier books and the reason I fell in love with Pendergast and Preston Child. However, the last 1/3 felt awkward. I ended up rolling my eyes as I finished the last page. Disappointing finish to an otherwise well told interesting story. I gave this book a rating of 4 simple because of the first 2/3 of the book. I really enjoyed that.
listened to this on audio and loved it! Narration was fantastic. I felt like I knew the characters in the book, you don't find out who gets murdered until very close to the end - found myself guessing someone different throughout the book. Serious topics discussed in a fun approachable manner. If you are married and or have kids you will find something to relate to in this book.
When I started reading the book I loved the way she described everything - pretty poetic for the genre. It kept my interest and I couldn't stop reading. About half way through it was feeling slow, I had that feeling of “I'm only half way!” 3/4 of the way through I knew “who dunnit” and the last 1/4 was very slow and when everything wrapped up it still went on. I'm trying to decide if I want to read another one of her books. I ended the book feeling a little blah. However, as I said previously, the writing was beautiful in parts and because of that I may give another book a chance.
“Something else is needed if the wisdom is going to make any real difference in our lives. The “Warrior” needs to rise up.”
I enjoyed this book. There really aren't new ideas in here but I like Lisa's voice. I also enjoyed the format - each chapter is a core essential and lists specific ideas on how to achieve that essential in your life. The end of the book emphasizes that i. Order to feel better you need to make small steps. Pick a core essential and work thru it one step at a time. I love the direction the book gives and the fact that you are given the freedom to implement it in a way that will fit your particular situation.
Typical Gillian Flynn - dark and disturbing but unable to put it down. I have a feeling of dread when reading her books but I can't put them down. If I didn't have to sleep or work I would have finished earlier than I did. I do love her books and have now read all of them. Eagerly awaiting the next.
