The Sentence. From beginning to end, this title was so well chosen. The story wasn't as funny as it said it was, but that's okay. The life of Tookie, her family and friends during one year was worth it. It's my first book where I read about 2020 up close and personnal. It's a mix-up of history, politics, slices of life, touching scenes, little supernatural stuff and, yes, funny thoughts and moments.

This story is going to stay with me for a while.

Tout aussi beau que le premier tome. J'aime beaucoup le fait qu'Astride et Kiara, qui sont des enfants, agissent en enfants.

C'est triste, doux et magnifique tout à la fois. La fin nous tire des larmes, mais nous laisse sur une note d'espoir.

Magnifique. Encore une fois, les larmes nous montent aux yeux, tout en nous laissant sur une note d'espoir. Les trois jeunes, Astride, Kiara et Hatim, sont touchants chacun à leur façon. C'est rare de dire ça, mais voici une série quasi-parfaite. Quasi car me semble que je prendrais d'autres tomes!

Une lecture touchante et très prenante, bien écrite. Je crois que c'est un livre qui peut faire comprendre la réalité des personnes trans à ceux et celles qui n'y connaissent absolument rien. On y ressent beaucoup d'empathie.

Par contre, c'est aussi un livre qui vieillit mal. Il a été écrit en 2017 et disons qu'il y a du vocabulaire qui n'est plus beaucoup utilisé aujourd'hui. Et comme bien d'autres l'ont mentionné ici, il y a trop de stéréotypes hommes/femmes.

Je tiens à mentionner que ce n'est pas un livre irrespectueux, on voit que l'autrice a voulu montrer la réalité trans de façon à la comprendre. Mais comme je l'ai dit, certains aspects passent un peu moins bien aujourd'hui. Je le conseillerais à ceux et celles qui veulent comprendre la souffrance des personnes trans tout en recommandant de faire des recherches plus approfondies après coup.

Par contre, je ne le recommanderais pas vraiment pour des personnes de la communauté car de un, c'est un livre qui peut être vraiment poignant et pourrait trop les touchées et de deux, le vocabulaire qui pourraient les offusquer. Par, si elles sont averties et que ça ne les dérange pas, je crois qu'elles peuvent probablement se retrouver dans ce roman.

A good start, more of a 3.5 stars. I think it's a good take on the immortal warrior trope. On to volume 2!

We continue to follow the characters in their quest for answers. I find B a bit flat I must say, or maybe he just appears that way because of his exhaustion, which, fair.

I do like the story though, enough to read chapters 9 to 11 in digital. Only one chapter left, but double the pages! I'll reserve my final judgement when I'll have volume 3.

C'est tout doux, les dessins tout comme l'histoire. À lire pour qui veut un baume à l'âme.

J'ai vu plusieurs adaptations d'Agatha Christie, mais je n'avais lu que « Ils étaient dix » d'elle. Voici donc mon premier Poirot! C'est sûr que par bien des aspects, l'histoire et le style sont un brin vieillots. Mais ce n'est pas pour rien que cette autrice est la reine des « whodunnit » : l'enquête est prenante, on se laisse prendre au jeu d'essayer de deviner le/la coupable pour en bout de ligne se dire que malgré les indices (maintenant évidents), on n'aurait jamais trouvé.

J'ajoute que j'ai eu de la chance, je n'avais jamais vu d'adaptation de cette histoire alors la surprise a été totale!

Such a sweet story! A bit insta-love (especially the ending), but everything else just flows so smoothly, I can't be mad. I love the characters, I love Elliot's book hoarding problem (I can so relate to this!).

It's not a Christmas story, but I think it was a a nice one to read in the Holidays.

C'est un livre plein de douceur, surtout dans la façon d'aborder la dépression chez les jeunes. Par contre, je dirais que la fin est un peu trop légère pour le propos. Et un peu abrupte aussi, j'aurais aimé un suivi sur l'état du garçon. Mais j'ai aimé cet univers feutré.

A very good anthology, with very different stories. I really love this diversity where I could go from a chilling tale to an humorous one. I also love this author's writing, it brings you easily into her world. I strongly recommend this book to fantasy and horror fans. :)

So happy to have backed this on Kickstarter! A fun and sweet story, as are all Pixie and Brutus' stories. Love all the characters, I think all of them had their own spotlight.

J'ai adoré cette histoire un peu différente des trames habituelles de cette série. En soi, c'est une histoire classique: des extraterrestres qui cherchent une nouvelle planète où vivre, voient la Terre, kidnappe des humains pour en savoir plus, décident de chercher une autre planète non habitée, mais se fait trahir par leur ordinateur ultra performant. Bref, du réchauffé, mais c'est l'exécution qui rend cette histoire super intéressante.

Naturellement, Kim et Manon sont toujours géniales. J'ai beaucoup apprécié qu'on soit du point de vue de Manon. Mais je crois que le des éléments que j'ai le plus aimé est le travail d'équipe qui est fait ici. Pour une fois, on fait relâche sur les magouilles politiques et religieuses. On a ici une mission d'exploration et ensuite, de sauvetage. La fin de la mission (avec les deux extraterrestres) est très touchante.

Histoire originale, avec peut-être quelques longueurs quand les personnages partaient sur des réflexions philosophiques. Mais je crois que ça fait parti du style de l'auteur étant donné qu'on avait aussi ce genre de pensées dans L'art de courir sous la pluie (mais me semble que ça passait mieux quand c'était Enzo!).

Par contre, la fin m'a agréablement surprise, même si elle est douce-amère.

That was the third and last book from the Hatching serie and boy, that was fun! I love the characters, I love how they put their minds together to find a solution to the spidercalypse, I love how visual the story was. It would make an awesome tv serie, especially now with how good the CGI can be.

A tiny thing that I've liked less is maybe the ending. Not in itself, but how quick it happened. On the other hand, people had already suffered so much, so I don't mind that much that the big solution was found that fast.

Another thing is I would have liked to learn more about some characters' fate in the end. But I do like who died and who survived. In fact, I was surprised about how many survived. I've seen in some reviews that some would have like more deaths, but I'm happy that so many are still there. I do like happy endings. Now, for those who died: Both the preacher and the con man. They were a given. No tears on them. But I must say that I didn't predict Teddy's death (I was thinking more about Kim not surviving) and it caught me by surprise. It did made me sad, so that she was the only one to die in the core groupe was really okay for me. One small complain: the people that were with her should have honored her in the end. Like, presenting what she had filmed and given her some posthume award. I think that's my biggest disapointment.

In short, love that serie. I'll probably read other stories from that author one day. :)

Again, a super fun read. Less action, but no less interesting. Here, we are in the waiting game and I've really liked how each character reacted to the situation. Still love those characters by the way. Love how they interact with each other. Must say that my favorites are still the quatuor (well, quintett if we count the dog!) from Desperation, and the trio from Scotland. But honestly, there's no characters that I don't like.

Strong moments: When the president ordered the Spanish Prococol (I've got chills!). The snippets from minor characters whom we mostly won't hear again (sometimes we see hope, other times the opposite). The last chapters.

Seriously, very good story, captivating with bits of humour, action and touching moments.

First book of a trilogy, this is my read for Halloween! What you read in the summary is pretty much what you get: an invasion of human-eating spiders. If you're not afraid of spiders and want something fun to read, this is it. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but sometimes, you don't need mind-blowing plot and philosophical writing. Just a nice adventure/horror story. Also, I've quite liked the characters, already have my favorites whom I hope will survive. (I really, really hope the gay couple survive, because, come on, f*ck the “bury your gays” trope.)

On to the second book!

Je ne suis pas très essai, mais j'avoue que j'ai trouvé celui-ci très intéressant. J'ai aimé qu'elle revisite des vieux classiques avec un œil différent. Il y a plusieurs éléments que j'avais déjà relevés, d'autres qui ont été des surprises.

Ce n'est peut-être pas une lecture super approfondie, mais elle donne à réfléchir.

The first story was sad and sweet; the second was more in line of the Locke and Key's gore (and it was my favorite, heh!). The last one was nice, but mostly a wink to the characters to the main serie.

Finaly, the real life pictures in the end were nice! Love to see the inspiration behind the visuals!

Here, we follow another generation of Locke that came before Tyler, Kinsey and Bode.

First story “Small World” is a mix of adventure and gore that we like in the Locke and Key serie.

Second is “Open the Moon” (which was also in Heaven and Earth). Still like it, very beautiful, heartwarming and sad.

“Face the music” is nice, cute, but maybe the weekest from the anthology. Of course, it's only 5 pages long, it wasn't meant to be something super big!

“In Pale Battalions” is a three-issue story and it's... hard. I know it's the story that officially begins the World War Key serie and the characters are all on point, even John (although I hate his choices). But it's quite dark. I understand and appreciate the importance of this story, but it's not my favorite.

“Hell and Gone” however, oh I like this one! Mary Locke, now grown up, wants to save her brother's soul by going into hell. But before, she has to meet up with a certain... creature, trapped in the Burgess' basement...

Like many, I've watched the Sandman serie recently (and read the comics before). I know I've read before about this crossover but I kinda... forget it? I was very happy to see so many Sandman characters (and with Neil Gaiman's blessing!). It's a wonderful crossover, the two universes blend well together.

Oh and Mary Locke is a badass, as a child and as an adult. Love her!

The Beach Trap was the suprised book from Sweet Reads Box, the Beach Read limited box. It was, indeed, a a very nice beach read!

I love the dual voices from the sisters. It showed very well the miscommunication between them and how wrong they sometimes perceived each other. It was very well done. The love stories were also well written. I was afraid that it would be too much and take away from the sisters' story with their father and themselves, but no. Thet were juste enough. And very cute. :)

As for the humour, it was indeed funny when it had to be. But maybe less funny than I've hoped. In fact, the novel was more emotionelly charged than I thought. I had to take breaks sometimes. That's why it's a 3* from me. But that's my personnal opinion. Objectively, it's a really good book and for their first collaborative novel, the authors did so well.

Magnifique conclusion. J'avais deviné quelques événements, d'autres ont été de bonnes surprises (la patronne est vraiment ratoureuse!). Jusqu'à la fin, on a senti non seulement l'amour des livres, mais aussi la passion des bibliothécaires (et leurs amis !) de transmettre cet amour.

Voici une série que tout le monde devrait lire. Les mordus de lecture, c'est évident, mais aussi les autres. Ceux et celles qui dénigrent les bibliothèques et leurs employés. Ça leur ouvriraient peut-être les yeux, heh.

J'aime les Higgins pour leur structure sans surprise, mais j'avoue que parfois, ça devient un peu redondant.

Ici, on change un peu le cadre classique en envoyant l'inspecteur à Bordeaux. En général, on a toujours quelques leçons d'histoire, mais là, on a vraiment envie d'aller découvrir cette ville. Les personnages sont typiques d'un Higgins, un peu stéréotypés. Toutefois, l'un.e était vraiment méprisable et un.e autre, adorable. Je les ai vraiment apprécié.es.

Et si j'ai réussi à découvrir qui était l'assassin (yoohoo! un miracle pour moi!), je n'avais pas vu venir le dernier revirement de la fin. Juste pour cette fin triste et touchante, ça mérite un 5*.
