I am a fan of the time travel genre and always look forward to reading a book with that as its main theme. I found the book to be just OK. The story took very long to get moving and was dry in the middle parts. I believe the author was trying to make you care for the characters and what happened to them. In the end, I couldn't have cared less and I thought his solution to the story could have been better.
I had seen the series on Amazon and thought I would check the book out. I enjoyed the book quite a bit but found myself enjoying the series more. I think it was because of how they added parts from later books in the series. If you liked the show, you might be disappointed in the book. It is well written and does give a deeper dive into the characters. But comes up a bit short in the end. I will continue to read the books. I liked them enough to catch up to the show.
The concept of the story was good, I enjoyed the dream puzzles and the mystery of the alien. But the character of April was too much for me. I dislike that person in real life so having to read a whole book centered around that type of character was a bit much for me. I understand she redeems herself in the end but I couldn't feel happy for her since she hab been terrible throughout the book.
I think I was 20 years too late in reading this book. If I had read it in the late 80s, it would have had a much stronger effect on me. It's quite remarkable how many of the things he wrote about in the 1980s have come about. His writing is vivid and has so much imagery; it's hard not to like the book. But the story wasn't easy for me to follow, and the main character was hard for me to like.
Never having read a James Patterson novel, I thought I'd start with his first book. I realize I made a mistake after about 20 pages. The story never grabbed me and I was confused by his time jumps. Not having grown up during the time there were many references I just didn't get.
When I finished the book, I had to Google a synopsis of it to see if I missed something. The ending made little sense. I have read that his later books are much better and I won't knock a writer for putting himself out there. We all have to start somewhere. I'll pick up one of his better-reviewed books and give it another shot.
