Its interesting and strange, I'll tell you that first. I love fantasy but I'm all about urban fantasy so Pandora Hearts was a little hard to grasp since it is set in its own world. Oz Vessalius is our main character, he is a 15 year old boy and its his birthday so that means the coming of age ceremony, where no one under 15 can attend, is going to happen. He's to be the successor to the house of Vessalius which happens to be one of the four main Dukedoms but being an adolescent, who is also neglected by his father, he doesn't really care about all that. Oz just wants to have fun.
Now since this is the first volume in the series there were a lot of things that I didn't quite get and left me slightly confused but I am positive will be explained further in following volumes. The things that have been revealed are certainly something that has caught my interest.
Overall the art was excellent, the characters I've met very interesting and unique. The author/artist seems to really know what they are doing with world building, plot setting and pace.
Check it out, just make sure to have volume 2 to read next right after.
I gotta say the first volume of this manga was OK, I wasn't loving the time traveling all that much but I gave the series another chance and two hooked me and now I've finished reading seven. I love this series its funny, its sweet, there is romance and as you get into later volumes a lot more action. Now I have to suffer and wait for the next volume like all the other fans.
OK I will say this, the first volume isn't much to get all excited about it, in my opinion it was OK but I have been lucky to read up to volume 7 in the series and I LOVE this manga. Its is sweet, FUNNY, romantic, heart wrenching and as you get into later volumes is filled with more and more action and character development. Do what I did and make sure to give this manga a second chance, it deserves it.
I don't know what else to say to you other then the fact that this book was good and that I will definitely be getting the sequel...but I'll try.
Sitting in a dungeon in Ixia our heroine, Yalena, awaits her execution for a crime that she does not regret, murder. She knows what she did, why she did it, and that it was wrong, but there is nothing she can do about it. Even if the murder was an accident or a matter of self defence the consequence is the same – death. But Yalena is in luck because she is next in line for the hangman's noose she is also the chosen candidate to be the Commander of Ixia's food taster. And because she is no fool she takes the job and all the risks that come with it.
Filled with political intrigue, assassins, and acrobatics Poison Study was a fast paced refreshing read that I hadn't encountered in a long time. It's not your typical YA where romance normally tends to take centre stage leaving the rest of the story in the background but a story I believe that has a little something for everyone - humour, action, and yes, even romance.
Recommended for fans of The Darkest Powers series by Kelley Armstrong.
I checked out this series because I am a fan of shoujo manga and wanted to read something romantic and sweet, that is definitely what I got while reading this series. Chocolate Cosmos is very cute and funny manga and the art is fantastic, I was hooked from the first volume and cannot wait for the next one.
When I really love a book or am seriously pulled into it then it takes me a maximum of two days to read it (with school and other stuff) but if I am not loving it that much then it takes me a bit longer. It took me a bit longer to read Stray, now I like the book; it was very good it just didn't hold my interest as much as other books did. The beginning began with a good action filled fight scene but then the pace slows down, we learn about our protagonist, a bit about her background, her life etc and we find out that she likes to complain. Faythe Sander's is a young college student in her mid twenties with plenty of rebellion under her belt. She wants to be treated like an independent woman and not a uterus with legs and we as the reader hear about it a lot along with a couple other things she isn't too happy about. Thankfully the story isn't only about that.
The fight scene was there for a reason, tabbies (female shifters) are being taken and it's the mystery behind the taking that keeps the pace moving. With each new reveal of information or new crime the story moves along more quickly until I am finally gripped and stay with the story until the end.
Stray is a well written book filled with drama and dotted with action. The protagonist was young and therefore annoyingly immature but in the later half of the book I grew to admire her for what a strong woman she was and for finally doing some growing.
I loved this book. I first picked it up because of the beautiful cover and then I loved the idea of a girl in a poor position escaping from the horrible place to be free and travel. But don't worry this is not a poor Cinderella who was rescued by a prince and lives happily ever after. No this is story is filled with adventure, surprises, betrayal and true love. In fact this isn't a Cinderella story at all but a world filled with wonder and magic :).
First thing I have to say is when I picked up Dime Store Magic I expected witty humour, a strong take no lip heroine, and action galore. And the second thing I have to say is that is what I got. Kelley Armstrong's writing never ceases to disappoint whether the genre be YA or Adult. The characters are always real, the relationships between them dynamic, and the darkness thrown in keeping me glued to the pages.
From the Prologue the stage was set and from there the problems and enemies that Paige and Savannah had to face just kept mounting and mounting the next tougher to handle then the one before it. In this story loyalties were tested, prejudices broken (sort of) and our heroine strengthened. It was just one big chaotic ripple effect leading up to the climatic explosion in the end (not really but you get the idea) and I have to say if this was a movie I'd be walking away from the theaters going wow.
Spoilers for A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY.
With the arrival of the Holiday season, REBEL ANGELS picks up where A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY left off. It is approximately two months after Pippa Cross' death and despite being surrounded with Christmas decorations and her first encounter with snow Gemma cannot escape the guilt of feeling responsible for her friend's death. And unfortunately for her, despite the great danger and loss suffered the last time she entered The Realms both Felicity and Ann, Gemma's best and only friends, are anxious to return.
Gemma is of course hesitant at first but soon this hesitation takes a back seat when she receives a visit from Kartik the Indian boy who is both her guardian and tormenter. He comes bearing a message: Gemma must return to The Realms and set order to the magic unleashed by her after she destroyed the ruins, an act that both killed Circe's assassin and freed her mother.
I enjoyed this book, it was filled with both clever clues and even cleverer tricks ready to trip you up and lead you astray as both Gemma and I barrelled towards the climax. Libba Bray, as many other excellent writers, was able to balance the normal and paranormal in this story perfectly. Her characters were fantastically realistic if not a tad annoying at times and her heroine a strong young girl who grew stronger in the end. The only thing I can really say that I did not like about REBEL ANGELS was the gullibility of most of the adults in this book that had me rolling my eyes in disbelief.
Still as I watched Gemma take in and participate in the customs of her 1895 London home the pace never dwindled or the gullible adults become the centre of focus. She may have had to attend balls and makes small talk with annoying gossipy women of society but there was always a disturbing vision reminding us that everything is not as normal at it seems.
This was my first proper review everyone. Please tell me what you think :)
This was an excellently story filled with romance, sibling bonds and intriguing mystery. At first the book took me a little awhile to get into because I was not used to reading historical fiction but after getting over the customs and language of the age I was able to enjoy the story and its wonderful characters.
Thanks to my wonderful friend I was able to borrow her ARC of Hush, Hush and I just finished reading this book a few minutes ago and must say that I loved it! I need the sequel now and this book does not officially release until next month, how am I going to survive the wait? The characters were thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining, the protagonist her best-friend and Patch were each hilarious in their own right and I enjoyed a certain aspect Nora and I shared and was happy to completely understand her when that aspect of her life presented a problem (would give you more details but I don't want to spoil).
What I can say though is Hush, Hush is as hilarious as it is suspenseful and dark, and Patch is as terrifying as he is addicting.
The book had me hooked from before I read it and still has me in its clutches long after I've put it down.
I love this series, it it one of my top favourite shojo manga (and I read a lot of shojo manga >.>). Sakura is a strong take no crap character and Fuji is lovable and cute ^_^. Every volume has me laughing and awing and I just can't give it up. Plus the style of clothes the artist draws all her characters in is just adorable and different and reminiscent of the 90s imo ;).
Adapted from the Evil Spirits series by Fuyumi Ono Ghost Hunt is an enjoyable delightful read with enough spook factor to keep me in suspense without keeping me up at night with nightmares.
After she accidentally causes his assistant injury Shibuya employs Mai Taniyama as his temporary assistant while he investigates a supposedly haunted old school building. Shibuya or Naru-chan as Mai calls him due to his narcissism has been hired by Mai's school principal along with a Buddhist monk, Catholic priest, Shinto priestess and psychic medium to figure out why accidents keep happening around the old building. But it seems that all of these professionals might be in over their head when their exorcisms turn out to have no effect and Naru-chan's equipment along with the medium detect that there are no spirits in the building. Still how do you explain the strange noises and violent activity that seem to point fingers to a poltergeist?
Filled with a cast of colourful characters Ghost Hunt is different from the usual manga I tend to read, not necessarily shoujo or shounen I think both genders would enjoy this series greatly. Mai is a heroine with a subtle strength, she's not terribly brilliant but she asks questions , is observant and sympathetic and kind. Naru isn't your typical male manga MC as he's narcissistic and mean most of the time but he's also intelligent and knows what he is doing. And he does give respect where it is due but don't expect him to be nice to you if your a nuisance.
What I also liked about Ghost Hunt was that an entire story was finished in one volume as opposed to other mangas where one story is dragged over a course of many volumes. It didn't feel rushed and it didn't feel like anything was missing and this volume was also a great set up for the next volumes to come because it introduced us to the characters without delving out too much information on them. I want to know what other adventures these guys will have and I want to know how the relationship between all of them will develop.
Points to the publisher (DelRey): I appreciated the explanation on honorifics and the translation notes at the front and back of the book.
This manga is described as horror and that fits because it is much darker than Yuu Watase's other series. There is a lot of violence and this is displayed clearly from the vivid illustrations to the story itself it is rated correctly for older teens. But it is also a very good story there is folklore, fantasy, scifi and definitely romance because this is after all a shojo manga. Give it a read, I thought it was a a very good story that had me laughing and cringing and crying.
I tried to reach 50 pages but I just couldn't. I think I got to 25 but I could not continue. This was my second time attempting to read this book and it was no better the second time around. I tried to like it for the cover but ugh sorry cover! You are beautiful but this book is meh.
Unfortunately I did not finish this book, I think I made it to chapter 6 placed it down tried to pick it back up again and couldn't concentrate. The first four chapters that I had read online was the reason I decided to read the book. The Main Character was funny and the writing was light and entertaining and I thought this book would be a fun comedic chick-lit but unfortunately the “evil stepmother”, the spoiled two-dimensional rich kids and the bad-boy that wasn't really bad didn't hold my interest.
I thought I was going to like this it seemed like my kind of read in the beginning but aside from Joe Fideli and Lucy I didn't really like the characters. Maybe the others like the main character Bryn I could come to care about if I stick to the book but I don't have that kind of patience. I've already read 95 pages and I want to use my time reading a book I LOVE.
I got as for as chapter four and placed down the book because well something happened that I found to be ridiculously unrealistic. I hadn't officially dropped the book at this point, I did have plans to return and give it another shot but after reading reviews that made it sound like the story did not get any better I gave up.
It had promise in the very beginning but things quickly became frustrating, characters irritating and scenarios hard to digest. However, since I barely got into this book I highly suggest you don't go off my impression of this book and read reviews of people who actually completed the novel.
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We're now about halfway through our flight from Hong Kong to Limerick, and I just thought I'd let you know that I ... am ... bored. Bored, bored, bored, bored ... bored. - Douglas Richardson, Cabin Pressure
Sorry to say it but how Douglas felt about his long flight from Hong Kong to Limerick is how I felt reading this book. So much so that I decided not to finish it so this little review only covers the 30% of this book that I did read.
The plot was interesting: a witch preparing for a battle with a warlock that will take place on the summer solstice but the solstice is the start of a curse that will affect all witches and warlocks unless the witch can figure out a way to save them. Then she meets a warlock who isn't anything like the stories she's heard about warlocks, he didn't seem evil and this is where things stop being interesting.
I didn't care about the characters, I didn't care about their dire problem or their romance and I didn't care for the writing style. I like fantasy and romance and the cliché forbidden love stories but this book despite having those elements just wasn't doing it for me so I dropped it.
