jfc no. just no. ooc everywhere, an ending that's all deus ex machina and an eye for an eye in the most stupid of ways. then nothing, no reward, no nothing. this book was terrible. the first is horrible and disgusting, and this one is full of clichés and terrible plotting. only the second is good but damn, not worth to go through rape and abuse for a story of nothing. keep away from it. I feel cheated.
WELL. Now I understand the hype with these books!! All the horrors of the first one aren't seen on this, thing I'm really grateful for. The character development is the best thing of this book, I loved both the main protagonists. The plot keeps you glued to its pages and it's well written and planned. Everything has a reason, a purpose, a path.
Really enjoyed this second book. I'll forget the first one exists.
This is, without any doubt, one of the worst things I've ever read. And I've read fics written by obnoxious 12 year olds... I cannot even try to define what was wrong with it, since it was mostly everything. Plot wise it could have been ok, nice idea, but oh the development of it. It made no sense, it was spread too long at times, rushed at others, going on an endless loop of repeating the same sentences again and again. I am not exaggerating, there were sentences, descriptions mostly, that I could recite from heart by the end of the book. Yes, we get Philippe hates houses; Yes, we get Asmodeus smells like oranges and bergamot, etc.
None of the characters were likeable and none of their motives to do things made sense. I still don't understand the necessity of Madeleine in this story. Or, even, Philippe. OR, even, Morningstar, and he was the most likeable character, even if he's not even in the story. And they act so contradictory! I'm a prisoner, but I leave, but I come back, but I leave again, buuuuut then I will come back once more, hating every choice I make and having not even a good reason for why I act like this.
Mental.
I finished it because I try to never abandon a book, but you cannot imagine how hard and infuriating reading this was. The ammount of times I exclaimed ‘ffs' was too high.
Conclusion: No. Never again.
After Shadow's return and White road, this was a breath of fresh air. I really liked it! Back to political intrigue and the war between nations. I don't give it 5 stars because the end... well. I wasn't 100% pleased. But still!! Good book, it's nice to be back to what I really liked about this series.
Some things were good, some things were devastatingly bad, some things were ‘meh'. I expected worst, but I also expected much more. It is Harry Potter after all. Not imprescindible, almost avoidable. I'm quite contradicted because I half hated it and half liked some of it. I give it 2 stars for Scorpius only. And I will not consider this HP canon at all.
This book was a weird experience from beginning to end. Story wise... well, it doesn't really have a great story. It's actually pretty simple and easy and fast solved so, really, it's not a book about the plot, but about its world. Wow. So disturbing, dark and gore. I was fascinated by it.
So, I don't know how I feel and I don't know if I would recommend it, but it was a good read for me.
Disgusting, gut-wrenching, painful and at the same time hilarious and thoughtful. This is a whole new experience per se, never felt so many contrasting things from a book. The way Welsh writes takes you right into the middle of it all and shakes you to the core. I am still shocked by the ending. Really shocked. Extremely recommended, though be careful: not for the faint hearted, REALLY. It's vicious and disgusting and painful. As the book itself says: suitable only for persons of strong constitution. Really, follow that advice. It's not an exaggeration.
The idea, the universe of this book is amazing. I love horror stories and I love ones like this, where said horror is unseen, without a name or a face. The pacing and the structure of the book doesn't let you get bored at all, always wanting to know what happens next or what happened before. That said, I didn't totally enjoy this book. Lot of things where unsatisfying, and some where too fictional. I know this is fiction, but in a story where things are supposed to happen in our real world and present time, I need some logic. Plus I felt the ending was lacking, but then again, I suppose it couldn't end any other way.
Still, entertaining and easy to read. All in all, quite good.
I loved this. Funny and simple and complicated at the same time. Arthur's ideas of war speak to me at high levels. I loved the political complexity and the human morality described in here. I missed Merlyn though, and some parts were certainly too slow. Still, beautiful, heart moving book. I understand why so many people love it.
