this book has been in my garage longer than i've been alive.
Took me nearly 23 years of living with this book to finally read it and it wasnt that great.
I looooove non fiction books about nature and animals but the layout in this book was horrible and it makes it so hard to read
learnt nothing new as all the stuff in the book is kinda basic stuff.
very very very below average.
My favourite genre (or sub genre i suppose) is supernatural horror set in houses AKA haunted houses.
I also love horror novels but this book just fell very flat.
The main character is not a good person, she treats everyone around her like trash (like shes yelled at multiple strangers she only just met because they didn't magically know about her childhood) and shes very very VERY dumb.
Comedy was thrown in at the worst times. I love comedy in horror novels (thank u stephen king) but not when your near death.. it just takes me out of the story and atmosphere.
Neil was a big pushover. Grow a backbone and stand up for yourself Neil...like seriously???
It read like a middle grade book which is not a good thing when the story is very gruesome and meant for adults.
Maybe i just read this during a bad time. I'm living through a natural disaster right now, my house might be submerged any day now and a lot of people have died from it so far so i was using this book as a distraction from everything going on around me which might of impacted me.
i was hoping this would scare me more than the heavy rain outside but no.
I read this in a rocking chair which is ironic as a rocking chair is a common occurrence in this book so whenever the creepy lady in the chair showed up.. it felt like i was her because i was also slowly rocking in a creaky rocking chair.. idk but it was fun lol
this is the 6th Stephen King book i've read and i'm very secure in saying that he is the best author of all time.
I know i'm reading all his very popular work first before i get to his lesser known stuff but his popular work is popular for a reason and i want to know what everyone is talking about
this book is reaaaaaallly good but its the first King book ive rated less than 5 stars.
It was fast paced but the “boss fights” went too quickly and things felt too quickly concluded so the book felt kinda empty??
I loved the characters. King knows how to make you feel like you've known a character your whole life with just one page, its crazy.
I loved Mark. what a legend.
NOS4A2 by Stephen Kings son Joe Hill is the better vampire story in my opinion.
this took me a long time to read which sucked because I don't want to be reading about little girls being tortured and murdered for that long but I needed breaks from this book. It's hard to read rightfully so. It should be hard for anyone to read. It was slow paced which sucked but it was also so informative on how law works.
The Australian law system sucks ass. Australia is seen as a safe place but that's only because no one gets convicted.
I live in a popular city in New South Wales and everyone knows a rapist here. Rapists never get convicted here and there crimes are known but they're allowed to walk free and PEOPLE ARE STILL FRIENDS WITH THEM. There's barely any murder here, maybe one murder every 15 years? The last 5 years there has been 2 murders, one boy killed his girlfriend and lived with her body for a while. The other murder was just the other week, someone shot someone in their home. When murders happen it's hard to process because of how safe our city is but it's crazy knowing how bad the murders were in the 80s and 90s. Knowing I've lived 5 minutes away from some of these child killers is hard to process.
I get told I'm wrong for this and “have no morals” but I personally think that anyone who assaults a child should be locked up for LIFE or be sentenced to death. Child killers/abusers/sex offenders are the lowest of the low and deserve to be tortured for life. Let the other prisoners go HAM on them
the holocaust is being forgotten, erased, wiped from schools circulars lately and i think it needs to taught more now than ever. The holocaust is treated more like fiction than real life this past decade. People need to know what happened and to stop treating it as something so “simple” as just jewish people dying. People need to know the torture millions went through. Men, women, CHILDREN. Jewish people (and other races) went through hell. Pure torture. Jewish people are being erased as a race lately. People are denying that being jewish is a race. Did we not learn??
i hate this world ugh
read this if you want to BAWL YOUR EYES OUT.
I feel numb. I need to cry so bad but all i can do is stare at my ceiling and just be numb.
I love when books make me feel this way but god does it hurt
bro i need a drink. I was having a good day and then this book happened and now i'm to cry so hard that i puke
“if it's not good news, at least i'm free. We all are”
i had no interest in this book until I found out that one of the main subjects of this book was a serial killer, Ed Kemper.
He's a serial killer that i find the most interesting. He is very different and reading this just proves my point more. The detective in this book holds Ed Kemper on a pedestal to every other serial killer. “unlike Ed kemper” “they weren't acting like Ed kemper” “ed kemper this” “ed kemper that” the detective compared every single case and killer to Ed Kemper.
Ed Kemper committed insanely gruesome crimes. Decapitated girls, killed his grandparents, killed a family friend and then decapitated his mother and sexually assaulted her decapitated head. Yeah... its disturbing which makes it so damn confusing that Ed Kemper committed these crimes. The author (detective) said he liked Ed. The prison guards love ed. Everyone enjoys his company and find him to be a splendid guy. Every serial killer is “charming” but professionals have said that Ed wasn't putting on any act, he was just a very nice guy. He is famous for being 6 foot 9 and large so hes a giant. He's a serial killer that turned himself in once he killed his mum. He was very open about his murders and let police use him as research to catch other serial killers. Its insane how much everyone liked him. Hes still alive, hes like 70 now and i hope he dies in prison but i think hes more loved in prison then he would be out of it. People LOVE him. He's a teachers pet but the prison version.
So its weird, hes such a likeable guy that no one suspected, he wasnt ever suspected until he turned himself in. Police hung up on him because they didnt believe him but he kept ringing to give his confession.
watch his interviews on youtube if you want a better perspective into him. Hes insanely smart and oddly calming but his crimes make me want to vomit.
for most of the book it was a 2 star read for me. I went into the book thinking it was one thing and it it was entirely different than everyone else has told me so i was a bit thrown off. I didn't connect with the characters until the very end.
I bumped it up to a 3 star because i finally connected with the characters and i let the story sink in.
Idk why i didn't like this book as much as i expected, the plot and story of this book is right up my alley but maybe i went in with too high of expectations
one of the weirdest books i've ever read.
First of all, theres a character named Beef. Enough said.
The word ‘meth' is mentioned hundreds of times in this book, it started to not feel like a real word any more.
There were more slurs in this book than you hear when you step onto a Sydney train full of 13 year old boys.
Everyone in the book is on meth.
The romance was NOT needed. It was gross. He calls her the N word and a bunch of other slurs and she FALLS IN LOVE WITH HIM?!? and hes a college boy while shes 15 or 16. Dudes a weirdo.
This book is just one big PSA to not do drugs.
especially meth. The main character of this story wasn't Cat, it was meth. It was mentioned so much it might as well be the main character lmao
i grew up poor so i grew up around crackheads in my neighbourhood, its scary stuff.
I'm still poor but living in a slightly better neighbourhood but can still hear my neighbour yelling about the rising price of heroin.. Yeah lets just say that i will NEVER do drugs.
So in conclusion: DON'T DO DRUGS
i read the first 50 pages a few years ago and the subject was too heavy for me to read at the time but i finally got around to reading it and wooooow.
it's set in america in 1959 and its about the first black students attending an all white school. I'm australian so i didn't learn alot about american history but segregation in america was one of the things we did learn so i'm happy i had some info before starting this book.
I grew up in australia. Back in 1999 it was very white. I didn't know black people existed until 2011. I didn't have internet, The tv shows i watched were australian or british (aka very white) and i never saw a black person. ever. When i found out that people of other colours existed, i was confused because why haven't i ever seen them? A year later i found out that racism existed. i did not learn about any black history until i was 17. thats CRAZY. We were finally taught about the racism in america in 2016. TWENTY SIXTEEN!
My sister was born 2003 and i grew up thinking she was white (we have different dads) and its crazy how my childhood was so white and i didn't see any other colour even though it was right in front of my face. My sister is aborignal australia, shes from the OLDEST culture and civilisation in the world. She experiences racism every single day. From family, friends, school. She got in trouble for reporting the racism she endured at school. SHE got in trouble. Its like what Sarah endured during this book. The white people want POC to stay quiet and out of the way. Its clear to see its still happening today as i have my sister to tell me about the many slurs she gets called everyday.
Phenomenal writing and i can't wait to read more from Robin talley!!
minor spoilers but i don't think they ruin anything. Just kinda revealing a relationship that happens but it was very predictable from the start of the book so read ahead with caution.
i love you Morgan Matson, i truly do but i can't defend you on this book..... honestly wish i could go back in time to unread this book.
plot:⭐️
characters: Minus a million stars
pacing:⭐️
first thing i want to rant about is the characters. A bunch of evil little teens who have never been disciplined in their lives.
now for a little serious rant.
Toby was the WORST.
Toby treats Wyatt like an object. Ok u have a little crush on him but he's not allowed to reject you? he let you down gently and let you know that he had his eyes on someone else.
Wyatt goes to date someone else because hes human and is allowed to and toby loses it. She rips the friend group apart because WyAtt iS HeRs even though he does not like her in a romantic way.
“you stole wyatt from me” AGAIN HE IS NOT AN OBJECT, no one accounts for his feelings ever.
Wyatt was painted as a bad guy for a natural thing. Damn i'm sorry he doesn't share mutual feelings to you Toby... that must make him so evil right?
All these characters have to tiptoe around Toby and don't see an issue with it. ‘its just how toby is” shes a sociopath bro. Someone needs to tell her off. I don't understand how this entire friend group walks on egg shells around toby but again don't see an issue with it. I can't even explain how bad toby was in this book. Honest to god, if she was real she would probably be a serial killer.
also she treats waitstaff rudely on purpose..... yeah shes a sociopath for sure.
Bree needs a hug. She needs new friends. The only other emotion i felt for this book other than anger was sadness. I just wanted to save bree from these insane people. She didn't deserve any of the treatment she got :( she didn't need to apologise for anything but was forced to because Tobys insane fantasies matter more apparently.
the main characters suck too. they sat there and thought about their feelings towards each other while a dog was painfully dying at their feet. “i wonder how he thinks about me” ok think about that later, the dog is have a seizure at your feet
Clark is a very unrealistic character.
pretentious idiot.
4.25 stars
one word for this book: HOLYSHITWHATJUSTHAPPENED. It is a word, it will be debuting in the Oxford dictionary any day now

I haven't read a book in so long that had me turning the pages like my life depended on it. I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time. Tried to put this book down so many times to do my daily tasks but it was impossible. My jaw hit the floor so many times and I audibly gasped like i was a overacting actor in a movie.
This book is CRAZY. You think you know what's happening and then it's flipped on you. And then flipped again. And again. And again. Absolutely insane.
Can't recommend this book enough. It's truly a masterpiece.
also this book proves that the mean girls trope reigns superior
only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is because the last 100 pages kind of felt out of place and different from most of the book. It felt off and I didn't like it but the ending was still AMAZING
[edit: i just found out this is the same author who wrote behind her eyes that turned into a netflix show?!? i havent seen it and didnt plan to but EVERYONE loves it so i might just watch it now!
ALSO THIS BOOK IS GETTING NETFLIX ADAPTED WHAT]
Plot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

So emotional.
This book deals with grief in such a realistic way.
I lost my father when I was a child. I never got to say goodbye and that eats at me everyday. I still need that closure. I need to speak to him again just like Julie did with Sam in this book. If I could ring my father now just to say the word “goodbye” I would.
I wasn't prepared for this book. It sent me spiralling. It shows how short life is and how at any moment you could just die. What happens when we die? No one knows and that's just so scary to me.
If I were to die young, I would just be a memory to those who loved me. If I were to die right now, I would forever be 22 years old in my loved ones memories for decades. I would be a passing thought in 20 years, I would be somewhat forgotten.
Do we move on and try and stop the grief when someone we loved dies? Or do we carry them with us for the rest of our lives and forever be somewhat sad? Death is natural, just as natural as eating, sleeping, breathing but why is it the hardest thing to deal with?
I lost my father and I'm currently losing my mother to illness and this book just reminded me that I have another chance to say goodbye and spend more time with loved ones. Life happens and its crazy and unpredictable and we could all become Julie one day.
Something to take away from this book is to live everyday without regrets. This is harsh but you could die any minute. LIVE YOUR LIFE.

In a less serious topic here, the two main characters share the same name with my pets hahaha
Julie is the name of one of my cats and I have a dog named sam
I- I don't- HUH?
this is one of those series that hyped up to be “different and not like the others” when in fact.. it's is the same and exactly like the others.
This is just another mediocre YA series that suffers from 2nd book syndrome.
How is this different from other YA books? I don't understand what's so special about these books. The first book was unique and good but wtf is this sequel?
I don't think I'm gonna read the 3rd book..
3.25 stars ⭐️
first of all, this book is about a girls dad that dies... ok I can relate because my father also died but I don't want to get too sad..... oh ok the main character shares the same name as my dad. So reading this I was constantly being reminded of my dad... not a good thing but it's not the books fault
I guessed the plot twist a page before it was revealed so I feel like a genius rn
The writing is amazing and I can't wait to read more from this author !
3.5 stars
ehhhhh.. this was a really really really enjoyable book in terms of writing style (omg ! ! need to read more from this author) and characters. The characters were so well written, it felt like I knew them personally. If the characters weren't so well written this book would be a 1 star, without the characters this book would fall apart.
It was interesting at first, I couldn't solve the mystery but when it does get solved.. its underwhelming. stupid really.
if I had to describe this entire book I would say its a rollercoaster. waiting in line for an hour, excitement building, youre kinda getting annoyed about waiting so long, you finally get on and you're way too excited, you cant wait for the big drop of the coaster. slowly climbing up to the big reveal, getting ready to be shocked, ready for the ride of your life and then the rollercoaster stops just before it plummets down. The ride broke, you have to get off the emergency exit and climb down the stairs. All that waiting and you were only a second away from your excitement being fulfilled but it all falls flat.
the ending was whack. Weirdly thrown in, it makes sense but still..
The first half of the book basically copied IT by Stephen king. a group of boys and one red head girl that they had a crush on. The red head girl has a abusive father, one of the boys is a master at celebrity impersonations, one of the boys dates girls that are just like his mum, the bullies are basically the same ones from IT, and many more I cant say because of spoilers.
It doesn't sound like much but when you read it, you'll think of IT straight away. Way too many similarities.
anyways in conclusion, started of really good, it was so addictive and the writing is phenomenal but I came away disappointed. It was a massive let down
