This book is a collection of short stories around a theme. That theme being that the Grim Reaper isn't what you would at first think, but that he (it?) is a guide and a comfort at the time of transition, and for that matter, other times as well. (He can also be something quite different, but you will need to read them all yourself because I am not going to spoil it by telling you.)
The short stories in the book run the gamut of emotions and there is sure to be a number of them that speak to you personally.
I can whole heartedly recommend this book for anyone who wants to take a peek into, what I would now consider, one of the most important jobs to ever exist.
This book is wonderful. Everyone knows The Hobbit but the new illustrations by Jemima Catlin are the perfect companion to this great story. They bring the whimsy back to what is arguably the best children's book ever written. Whether or not you already have a copy of the Hobbit, pick a copy of this book up.
Classic as always. You owe it to yourself to try this book. I re-read this book every couple of years and it never gets old. My favorite bit is this:
Caliph: And now how shall we employ the time of waiting for our deliverance?
Jafar: I shall meditate upon the mutability of human affairs.
Masrur: And I shall sharpen my sword upon my thigh.
Hassan: And I shall study the reasons of the excessive ugliness of the pattern of this carpet.
Caliph: Hassan, I will join thee: Thou art a man of taste.
This is a great look into the life of a very talented person. I started it by reading a page or two and then put it down for other books I am reading I picked it back up again this weekend and finished it in one session because it just kept me wanting to turn the page and read the next and the next. before I knew it I had finished it. I hope he does another volume with the next 10 years in it.
I loved the original trilogy, and thought it couldn't get any better. However taking the world to its next level made for a really interesting change.
The way both Allomancy and Feruchemy changed over the years, new things learned, things forgotten. The way firearms and rail systems changed how Allomancers live was just fascinating.
I hope we step into this age again before the tale moves even further into the future.
READ this book!
I enjoyed it. Though I have said it before and I'll say it again. I would NOT want to be a POV character in one of G.R.R.M.'s books. You'll either end up dead, crippled, maimed or a combination of all 3. Westeros is going to be run by 6 year old girls before this series is finished. (since that's all that will be left alive in the end...)
I have a strange relationship with David Eddings books. I really have to be in the mood for one. I have tried to read this book 4 times over the years and could never make it past the first couple chapters. This last time I burned through it in no time and started the next book putting down “Clash of Kings” to finish this series...
This is my 4th time through the series and it is just as good as I remember it to be. Every time I go through it I see something different, or that I missed the last time. The series just gets better and better with every read.
