Fun but the religious nutters were too weird to make it a great book. Liked the plot and scientific characters but maybe being a European I'm not used to the extreme religious nutters featured in the book and perhaps this made them unbelievable. Comparing Al Quieda to the Christian fundamentalists seemed pretty apt, are they really like that in the US?
A massive saga covering the whole of human history plus a few thousand years into the future comes to an end. I thought it was a bit long, a bit dull in places and not as good as the others and seemed to crawl along then suddenly finish in a sprint, but a somewhat jerky bitty finish and not altogether satisfying.
Can we have more episodes written by Markham! Absolutely fabulous. He's one of my favourite characters.
This series of books has some of my favourite characters of all time. You just can't help loving them, the way they talk and think. If may be a bit short for a full price book, but its, as usual, well worth it.
Max continues her incompetent blundering though time being kidnapped, kid apped, getting shot contracting diseases etc etc and it's a thoroughly enjoyable romp too. I'd love her not to be quite so accident prone, I can't see any boss in the world keeping her in the job, and I'd like to see less of Ronan, who is basically the nemesis of Max, clever, thinking and sensible plans and rarely getting into the scrapes Max does. Still, these minor points aside I love the style of writing and the story line and in particular the historical trips.
Sorry but I'm one of the minority who can't get along with the Historians. They plan for months and it all goes tits up almost every time, they get killed or injured with monotonous regularity and they must be impartial observers and not interfere or change anything but always do because rules and the timeline don't matter! To me it feels to contrived, drama for dramas sake and is implausible. I love the idea of the books and enjoy them being in different times but they appear to be the Star Trek Red Shirts of time travel.
A good read, enjoyable and very ingenious plot. Loved the take on religion and if you're religious I'd give this a miss if you don't want your faith ridiculed or exposed depending on how you see it.
Spoliers blow.
My only gripe was the ending. It was satisfying and certainly didn't spoilt the book, but wouldnt the Rev actually have held out, especially after going through school and surviving the beatings for his faith there?
