Have been running up against wants versus needs a lot lately. This book held my interest though I do get bored of white man = bad. He certainly did give her an education, though the whole thing was painful. She did a bunch of things that nobody in their right mind would do with or for money, IMHO.
Took me a few evenings to read. Really liked the current events, a la Owen Meany Might date it in the future, but great for the present!
This was a very fun read. I had the sneaking feeling that I was reading a young adult novel the entire time though, there is nothing serious about this. Just what I needed.I would read more.
Though it read like a YA novel, I really enjoyed this book. I think it would translate well into a movie. The few loose end (like the therapist) would be no problem for a screenwriter.
I finished this a couple of evenings ago and am surprised to say that I was a little sad it was done. My complaint about Wolf Hall was that it was very hard to get into because it was written as a sort of medieval stream of consciousness type of thing. This book was not that different in that sense, but the story was tighter. We can give Cromwell a new middle name and that is “whatever Henry wants Henry gets.” I continue to feel sorry for Anne.
I am unclear on what Clear meant for me to take away from it but I have learned a little bit about Scottish history. I had no idea of the church thing or that the rural populiation was dispossessed, though the last doesn't surprise me in the least.
Well this is my third Harrow novel and my first (10,000 Doors of January) is still my favorite. This one was long and windy– I remember wishing it would just have a message and be done with it. The message is ground into you over and over until you just want to burn up yourself. There's no real reason this author needs to be so pedantic. She has done much better.
You know a book is good when your rear is asleep because you have sat and read the whole day! Got this because I love-loved 10,000 Doors of January. While that book can't be touched, this one gives it a run for the money! One more to go, unless the author releases something new very soon, I hope.
I was very taken in, though the time and place are not my usual reading material. It is a little sad how the story devolved into the white people.
Very engrossing read. Was bummed when it ended, kinda abruptly, I thought. Left me trying to get into something new all weekend. Gaaa!
Clearly well written, though I'm not sure what it was about. Palestinian dispossession, that much is clear.
South America doesn't do much for me, but this unlikely story is based on an interesting premise , resolves in uncomfortable truth, and end with a surprise that has little to do with South America.
This was a really smart book! I have no idea if it is a mystery or thriller or whatever, but I greatly enjoyed it and thought that the themes were relevant and interesting. Brava!
Surprisingly good for a belly button observation in which the protagonist is is gay man from NewYork living in, of all places, Iowa. Not something I should relate to and nothing really happens, but I agree about dogs.
WTF was that? No clue what it was about, but the third star is for the fact that I finished it. It kept me going,
I don't ordinarily read non-fiction, but after seeing a poster advertising this book in Split, Croatia and looking it up, I thought what the heck and added it to my library queue.
What a happy coincidence. This book is heavily feminist focused, and perfect for this week, post-2024 election. Eff you, Donald, you disgusting cockwomble. And Elon the white whale with you. It's remarkable how this country hangs on to its vestigial tail.
More funny than scary, but doesn't even manage that.Just a vehicle for gender bending pronoun peddling. I think I am over this author.
