Everyone seems to have put a hold on this one at the library. I had it in my queue for ages. Took nothing more than a couple hours to read and will not leave a mark. Easy come, easy go.
I liked this one even better than Hello Beautiful. Though the premise is unthinkable, it was handled well and interesting to get in the head of an adolescent male. God knows, however, what the fully developed brains of the pilots were doing!
I'm sorry it's over though a lot of the time I struggled with the nihilism and found the story a couple of hours of hard work, going in. Glad I stuck with it. It's a total fairy tale, if fairies have a tale in this day and age. And she's right...middle aged ladies ARE invisible to society. It's been a big help in solo traveling!
Totally engrossing and atmospheric. Am sad to say that the entire thing is devoid of a brown person, though.
Read this and maybe I should give it four stars but I'm not sure that I “got” it. Sorry, not much more to say.
I don't know why I love homespun Southern, dare I say redneck, voice so much, but this one stole the better part of my day. Gripping story.
If the author meant to write one that wouldn't get optioned for a movie, he did with this one. Which makes it a better book. Agatha Christie-esque, with some good interior dialogue/monologue. I could do w/o meeting Aura, though I fear that ship has sailed.
I'm not much for pro-relationship propaganda, which is what this book felt like. But maybe I'm just still angry. I'm very glad I didn't spend another second stuffing my life down THAT toilet, be sure of that! If you're not sure, this is the book for you. Speaks to some nearly universal human experience.
I put this in my library queue because I enjoyed The Frozen River a great deal. This novel was also good, maybe not as great to me as Frozen River, but good enough to stay up very late to read and finish. And I did learn more history of that time and place.
Ugh, I really have nothing good to say about “Never Here.” It was truly a slog to get through, made zero sense and the plot twists didn't help a thing. I wish I had never read it, frankly.
Okay, I'm fully invested. What happens? This book had me strapped to my chair, reading like a mad woman, and I am not usually taken with stories from that part of the world, though I try....I feel like I've been left in the lurch. What happens?
Twisty turny schlock made for an average read. If this is truly her virgin novel, then she should make alot of $$$ on the American market
Wow, what a great book. I wish all historical novels were this able to teach and bind me to my seat as this one. I have put the other two of this author's novels in my library hold queue. Can't wait!
This book is likely better than the four stars I've given, but those are because it was hard. Much in the way that Atonement and Life After Life were hard for me to read. There was nothing scary in the paranormal sense, but the story was slow and the characters wrenching. Recommend.
Finished this earlier this week and, as I recall, not over the weekend b/c it was so hard to get into. I guess, though I like tarot and horses, I can't put myself in the mindframe of a “Yalie” (sorry, Bush) for extended periods. I did find myself finally absorbed and there were a couple of unexpected happenings so alls well that ends well.
I expected this to be good, and it was. One of the 3 plotlines was less engaging, since it is de rigour for today and has been done to death, but the main story was compelling in that it was well researched and the writing was good. Recommend.
My weekend project, done a day early b/c this went down easy from the start. A good story that didn't present, for me, any ethical dilemmas or entanglements to slow things down. Well written.
Meh. Standard fodder and a storyline that ranged from the tired to the improbable. DNA is interesting though, so I “read” it, which means I found the couple of sentences on each page (maybe) that brought the story forward. Not much else to say. Apropo for the month.
I'm not sure what to say. Maybe because I waited so long (library queue) for this, I feel kind of let down. It never got good, just more self-absorbed. I ended up being mad at all of them. Given how the author tried to make the protagonist sympathetic, it's hard to say whose side I land on. Maybe that was the point. I'm truly looking for a point here....
This book is spot on! Seem like historical novels are mainly about WWII or witches these days, and this one falls into the second camp but is so good!
