This book caught me pleasantly off guard. Honestly, halfway through the book, even with all the action and intrigue happening, I wasn’t quite sure where the story was headed. There were dastardly plots of course, and that would have been fine on its own, if a bit lackluster, but then in the second half, it’s almost as if the author finally got permission to write the story she had been wanting to write for ages. The world building exploded and a whole nother layer was uncovered that added a real richness, and needed depth, to the narrative. Stakes were raised, costs were exacted. It ended up being a well rounded jaunt. @Senevilla is totes right though - gonna need to get my hands on the second book sooner than later. The ending, while satisfactory, demands a lasting reconciliation that only another installment of the series can bring.

This was a fun twist on some well known faerie tales. Lots of action and adventure, witty banter, high stakes. Kinda bummed there's not another one to read. But I did see that Mr Hayes is the author of the Fred the Vampire Accountant books, so those just move up the TBR!

This one let me down a little bit. I was expecting a lot more from the story with the last "official" MacKilligan sister. And the chemistry between Max and Ze was lacking. But since there are unresolved storylines here, onto the next one I go.
