something tricky about collected stories is that some can be amazing and some can feel flat and
that's my case with this book
something we can't take back to Daniel A. Olivas is the diversity and representations that her work contains, even if we can't connect with each story it's worth the ride

first, thank you netgalley for the copy
At this point I'm embarrassed. It's not even the amount of cursed words because, yeah there's A LOT of them. It's the terms that the author use like lesbos, r-word... but when the n-word popped up I couldn't listen to this book anymore. So this is a DNF at 70%.
I wasn't ready for this AT ALL
I really didn't like beach read, very cliché but it was a year ago so I gave a shot to this one and omg I don't regret my choice
the problematic of the two mc hits me right in the middle of my heart, alex is me, I'm alex
AND it's important to say that I don't like romance like I used to, I almost never gave a romance 5 stars but... here we are friends !!
I love poetry, especially when it's about love and heartbreak
it's always tricky to rate poetry so take mine with a grain of salt
some poem felt really “simple” and some were elegant and worked
overall I liked to read this collection, particularly because it is modern in terms of visions on love and couple/commitment

“When she is not around, I invent her. When she is around, I invent her. It is not her fault.”
as bunny, i felt like the mc was in a fever dream, i still don't know if the story was a dream or not
she was over self-aware because of her lack of self confidence
her obsession for mrs s was entirely created and feed by her own fantasy/phantasm
overall I liked the character study but I don't think that it is a book I will especially remember
oooh that was a journey my friends
honest, raw, eye-opener... my jaw was, at multiple times, on the FLOOR by the easiness Bell is able to put words on complex behavior (yet, she explained it so simply that I was like, duh, of course it's the easiest thing to put into words...)
why is it not 5 stars ? as a non-religious person it feels pretty close to a religious book at times
I find myself forced to read about the bible and its content
The book start very strongly and I was directly invested or more specifically disturbed - and as a result I wanted to understand
But the more the story progressed the more I find myself not liking the book
I was intrigued by the synopsis, but the actual content was over the top. I read a lot of gay books with a destructive-codependent relationship, and this one was definitely pushed to the extreme.
anjir's transition felt unexpected and simply to feed the plot of the book, this is a touchy subject and I'm not directly concerned so I'm not going to speak any further on this matter
I can't say that I love the characters but I was really intrigued by their story

“how to exorcise a story that had never been told”
this is a book for people who need to write in order to exist
it is about immigrant experience, family hood and how the lives of our ancestors influence on our own lives, aka intergenerational transmission
the story is from different perspectives (past/present) with four main threads that converge and diverge within the story; julia alvarez bring all those threads together in a coherent and smoothly way
overall I really enjoyed this book, I would say that perhaps the audiobook is not the best way to consume this story, I recommend the physical book (even if the audio is great)
thank you netgalley for the copy
my main problem is that, there's a LOT of conversations and dialogues which gave no space for characters' development, as a result the story felt flat
I couldn't stand kendall and her internal monologue so I struggled to ruth for their couple
however the audiobook's narrators were good
