Disappointing.
Well, that can be the case with any sequel. Although the book tries to answer some questions about Gilead and its laws, the story itself doesn't have a premise or a build up. It's sad for it to follow after the amazing Handmaid's Tale. Received this as a Christmas present in secret santa pre-covid. Only got around to reading it now.
After watching the movie of the same name, I was curious to check the book out. As expected it didn't disappoint. Although I didn't get all the 80s / 90s references, the book was a joy to listen to. Narration by Will Wheaton was on point. A little skeptical of picking up it's sequel, due to its astonishingly bad reviews. At times, I found the book to be a little childish.
In an unrelated note, the book had me doing the same thing I do with Dan Brown novels. Google any art piece. Just in this case it was arcade games and board games.
Would recommend to any Sci-Fi fans :)
Hands down best suspense novel I've read in a while.
Hard to believe this was the author's debut novel. With unexpected plot twists and an epic reveal, the book won me over. Had my jaw dropped towards the end. Given the amount of murder mysteries I read, that level of shock is rare.
Would 100 % recommend to any suspense fan.
A touching story about the incarceration of Japanese Americans in the US after World War II.
Although the artwork's stunning, the main ability of the character was never explained. Which felt a little odd to me. Why not just tell the history of your people without elaborate plot points to make it interesting?
A decent read though.
When I found out that Mike Schur has written a book, I jumped at my phone to search if its available in my library to borrow. As my favorite writer for most of the comedy show's I've watched, I had high hopes from his book. And it didn't disappoint.
Not only is the book a guide to moral philosophy, it is also, surprise surprise, funny.
As the author very rightly mentions, we do not have time to read books on philosophy. And when we do, the literature is so difficult to read, that you just wish there was a summary of it all somewhere.
Mike Schur did the job for us folks.
Reading / Listening to this book, will give you an introduction to most of moral philosophy. Recommended for those who like philosophy.
