4.5 STARS
THE ONLY REASON THIS DOESN'T HAVE FIVE STARS IS BECAUSE IT TOOK ME ONE THIRD OF THE BOOK TO GET INTO IT, WHICH IS SOMEWHERE AROUND 200 FUCKING PAGES.
This book was awesome. That is the best way I can say it, truly.
It really helped that there was a small (and I mean VERY small, like TINY tiny) love-line going through, because I have a lot of trouble reading books without them, I just want that relationship, you know?
Also, getting to see from the killer's POV was FANTASTIC, and in the beginning I had an inkling about who the killer was because I thought I remembered something from the movie (which I saw like at least four years ago), but throughout the book, found my theory to be completely wrong (so then I had the theory that they changed the killer for the movie) and then I got to the end and then found out that I was actually RIGHT (Unless, they actually DID change the killer in the movie, in which all of this doesn't make sense at all).
I would like to thank my dad for owning this book. In English. (Or I wouldn't have read it.)
God, yes, this was so good!
When I read this the first time, I had this idea that the story was “slow” but it worked in its favor. And now, as a more experienced reader if you will, I have figured out that that is only half true.
What is true is the fact that the book (and really, the series as a whole) is not as action-packed or fast-paced in the same way a lot of other YA fantasy is (think Throne of Glass, Heroes of Olympus, Shadowhunter Chronicles, etc.), but it's not slow. Tons of things happen, and the pacing is simply perfect. It works incredibly well for this type of mystery. I love how the reveals always feel earned because of all the foreshadowing. It's just so good!
Sigh. Moving on to the next as quickly as possible omg.
It just wasn't for me.
The whole thing is written in letters though, and I found it was hard to get through, even though it was very well written. My main problem was the length of the book, I felt it went on for way too long, and found myself skipping pages because they irrelevant. I also didn't like the ending, it had gone too far and it just... the whole thing frustrated me to no end and I couldn't stand that.
Overall the book annoyed me quite a lot, and when I finished it I found that I really hadn't enjoyed reading it. It just wasn't for me.
4.5 stars
how the rating has changed with this reread! this was better than i remembered and i just love that fact.
oh it was SO CLOSE to being 5 stars! seriously, this is a great book, i mean there's so much angst and you're just like almost screaming at the characters to just not be so terrified of hurting each other's feelings. but also you don't hate it, and it makes sense, and there was more magnus in this book which made me sooooo happy, but i wanted more of isabelle and more of clary and isabelle together and i just
idfk
what pulled this down a little was probably jace being a very angry teenager. that's it. like, that's literally it.
it was really good, man, this is real good shit.
This was such a great reread (that i started in february and had on pause for literally 9 months) and so well-deserving of the four stars I gave it my previous reread.
It's fun and exciting, and I had forgotten so many small things that I'm so happy to be caught up on again! Can't wait to get into the next one soon. I just love this series and I hope everyone who reads it enjoys it as much as I do. Totally worth the reread, it's been four years and I was in desperate need to freshen up my knowledge on this book. Most of what I remembered came from the book or TV show and they can only get the big plot points in there. I just totally blocked out how rude Isabelle was to Clary for a big chunk of this book lmao. One of many things I had totally forgotten.
And honestly, I love Jace. I can never not love Jace. I just love him. He's awesome, he's funny, he's badass, and I love him.
Ohhhh my god. I love Julie James' books, like they're so great, and cute, and wonderful, and funny, and the protagonists are fantastic, and the woman are badass as well as the men and I just...
Think I loved this book even more this second time around! It was just so great! It's not a complete four point five, but it's like a four point.... three or something. Loved it!
I'm on a total romance kick right now and I love it.
Gahhh, I just love these books so much!
Julie James is fantastic at writing books that just make you so happy!
I love Rylann's sass, it's fucking fantastic, and oh my god, I can't even with how cute Kyle is, and why why why with the whole thing that happened nine years ago, and ugh, this might be my favorite of them, but gosh, I don't even know.
I absolutely LOVED the business aspect, seeing Kyle get his business going, it was so cool, made me want to start my own company there for a second, gosh and I just fucking love these attorneys, okay, my GOD, it's fantastic.
The book was hilarious and amazing and I needed some fluff and I finally got it, and it made me so happy, and squeals hysterically for two hours
