I expected to love this book, and feel bad I didn’t. With only very general knowledge about the story, I found it difficult to get into it. I felt disoriented in the world we were being thrown in, and the story only started picking up for me when background information on how the regime was built was shared. I really enjoyed the last third and would have liked to read more.

I really liked her writing and the themes the author explored, and did not expect the story to develop as it did. However, the character development wasn't too believable for me. Maybe it was on purpose - but Isabel's rigidity didn't fit well with the quick romantic turnaround in the middle of the story. I would've liked to know and see more about her internal conflicts. It feels like she let go of them very suddenly..
If I hadn't read all of the high praises about this series and how the first book of this series mainly consists of world building, I'm not sure I would've finished this book. I didn't enjoy the writing style too much, but have to admit that the story was captivating after about 50-60%. I normally do not read fantasy/romance, so this book felt like a cringy, guilty pleasure at times. Maybe that's okay though? Maybe I'm allowed read lighter stuff that's just... fun? I'll definitely pick up the second book and see whether this has sparked something in me.
Not too sure about how the books were connected. I saw some character overlaps but not really... the deep connection I expect if stories are being put in one book. Also, I felt like the stories ended as soon as started to become invested in the characters. But I have to admit: despite my critique, I really enjoyed reading the book (just not finishing it). And I adore Yanagihara's writing.
3* because it was a light read and easy to finish book.
What it isn't: challenging or deep. The characters and the plot remain superficial, I often longed for more depth. Still don't really know what made the two characters even like each other (apart from being “hot“). The mentions of race and politics seemed superficial as well (although I must say I liked the idea).
Still, it was a quick and enjoyable holiday read for me — which, maybe, is exactly what this book is perfect for.
