I really wanted to like this more than I did. The ending could have saved it, but alas, it didn't.
Spoiler
Lee/Leo/Nora seemed like a weirdly normal, sociable woman for a 26 year woman who couldn't move on from a relationship that lasted 6 months from ten years ago (when she was 16). Maybe she was extremely obsessed with it/him (which would have made a better twist–an unreliable narrator who had amnesia!) Also, it seems as if she has no other friends in her life other than Nina.
I liked the premise of the book, and then I got about 30% in and could see where it was going. While it didn't end up exactly as I thought (thankfully), it was close enough. I think the author tried to have the book be too many things at once and was intent on utilizing the 1 hour in the future plot device regardless if it worked or not. Thoughts could have deeper, characters could have been more complex, plot line could have been simpler.
I thought this was an interesting concept, and I liked the “cultish” fashion the company embraced their employees (separating them from their family and friends) and brainwashing them (keeping them up with work and events, keeping them so busy with no time to think). The sex scenes were truly bad, and some of the writing was as well. It was a bit predictable, but I still felt compelled to listen to the end.
First off, this is not my favorite genre. While I gave this book a three, part of me thinks I was being generous (must be the wine I drank). While I loved that she was a bit quirky and I love the travel aspect, the repetitiveness of her drooling over her best friend just totally put me off. I felt she just kept droning on and on about it, I wanted to slap the top of her head and say get a grip!! It could have been a much more interesting book by delving deeper into their travels and adventures, the deepening of their relationship, the finding of her path. Maybe I would've liked it better if we found out in the end that he was gay.
