In general, I like Martinez. This one was good but it's not my favorite (I think that one would be “Too Many Curses”).
Well bloody hell. That didn't end the way I expected it to (and that's not a bad thing!). Unsurprisingly as Case NIGHTMARE GREEN continues to approach, the Laundry series continues to get darker. I don't want to say too much because this one in particular really needs to not have anything approaching spoilers. But argh! What I actually said when the audio ended (BTW the audio version kicks some serious butt) was “Well sh*t”. I cannot wait for the next one (late next year alas!). Well played again Mr. Stross!
It's rare that a second book is better than the first for me. Equal? Yes. But rarely better. This is one of those exceptions and I'm looking forward to book 3.
Another solid book from Martinez. It started a little slow for me but turned out great. “Too Many Curses” is still by favorite Martinez book though.
I've had this for awhile. I'm very sorry I waited so long to read it. I loved it.
Update 5/13: Excellent audio version. The narrator does great downeaster Maine accents. I wish there could be more but the story wraps up so nicely. If we're lucky the author will set some other stories in this version of the world.
I'm amazed it took this long for a biography to be written about Jim Henson. This is a beautifully researched book. As a life long Muppet fan, I learned a lot of history and fun bits about one my favorite things in the world. It dragged (for me) a little but I think that was more about my tolerance for biography length (Audible 3 parter) than anything wrong with the book. Definitely go look up Wilkins and Wontkins on YouTube!
S.A. has definitely become an author on my “purchase immediately when anything new comes out” list.
I love this book beyond reason (to use my friend Jodi's description). I think it's my favorite McKillip and that's saying something. It makes me want to run around shouting because it fills me with such joy to finish such a wonderful story and with sadness because I have finished it.
Not to mention the fact that the two narrators for the audio version are also very very good. I think her books are very suited to audio because of the gorgeous language and complicated threads of story. The audio slows me down and makes me more aware of the poetry of the words and more able to follow all the twists and turns. If you read fantasy and you haven't read this one yet, run don't walk to the nearest copy.
This was amazing. The trilogy just kept getting better. In some ways, it reminded me of Bujold's Chalion books and that is high praise indeed! My only regret was the wretched narrator they used for Dante in this book.
This was great. If you classify yourself as any kind of video game/scifi/anime/LARP/etc geek, this is a really fun book.
Update: Audio version is good as well. I wasn't quite sure about the narrator at first but I got into her and decided I quite liked her by the end.
Meh but nice to see a vampire book that acknowledges all the murders that pile up over the years. This is not a sparkly vampire but he is a lawyer. :)
Very interesting to read a book set in modern day Nigeria. I need to seek out more books that are non-US/UK authors.
Loved this. I would have given it 5 stars but that's because I'm a volcano nut and not because it's quite a 5 star book. But it was really, really, good.
Funny little piece of history that was absolutely fascinating. Tom Standage, as usual, writes wonderfully.
