I loved the first book, but really struggled here. There were parts of it that shone like the first, but too few. I may continue the series at some point, but will take a break for now.

I took this one on pure recommendation and knew nothing of the story, and I’m glad it was that way. It’s a surprising book. I was rooting for the lead the whole way. I’m going to go straight onto the next in the series.

It is bleak, but a story about how humans treat each other when they’ve lost everything is always going to be bleak. I loved the relationship between father and son (especially at the beginning when there’s still some hope). This book makes me want to be a better father.

Each time I finish one of these books I always think, “the next one won’t be as interesting since all the story lines I’m most invested in are now resolved”, but I keep being proved wrong. And for this very reason, I’m moving straight onto the next one!
