flip-flopping between rating this 3.5 or 4 stars. from what i've read of reid (only evelyn hugo), the character relationships are always AMAZING whether they r good or bad (personality-wise). she always exceeds in building a connection with the character and her readers, which i really like, however it feels as if plot was second thought for this book. with evelyn hugo, it had character-reader relationship AND an interesting plot and i guess i expected the same here? otherwise, it's a really quick and enjoyable read (hello, i literally finished this in a day).
As much as it is boring, it's also...not my taste. Jamie is.... questionable and I definitely like what the show made of him instead of Gabaldon. Stopped at around 300, skipped forward and saw problematic things, then closed it. Good choice, espy. I would give it one star, but the writing is too good not to consider with the rating. Yeah, would not pick this one up again.
I'm biased, definitely. I'm not one to read books of romance, so that probably had something to do with my rating. I try to read books with as little info possible beforehand because it's generally more enjoyable that way. So, when I read that The Marsh Girl had been suspected for murder, I assumed the whole story would be about the murder. I will say it was my fault for overlooking the cover, and the reviews stating “a coming of age narrative.” Overall, as someone who doesn't like romance, I give it three stars. It's cute, interesting, and the little twist at the end was surprisingly fun.
