2.5
At first I didn't like this book at all, in fact, I hated it. But after 30% it got kinda interesting. It even reminded me of one of my favorite books of all time - “The Ruins”. But even that wasn't enough to make me give this book a higher rating. I don't know why. Maybe it's the fact that I don't remember a single character, or that I was very confused by the whole mystery element. I really wish I liked it more, but it is what it is. I honestly don't know if I'm going to continue with the series, I'm not rushing to pick up the next book. Time will tell.
I really liked this book. Especially the characters. They were so interesting to read about. The plot twist was super predictable, but I actually didn't mind, because I was so interested in the story itself. I think I would have liked there to be more scary and disturbing stuff, considering the premise of the book. But I still enjoyed it immensely.
it was a hell of a ride
4.5
I certainly did not expect to like it so much! I loved the characters, the pacing, the story itself. I appreciated that the romance didn't dominate the whole plot (even though I shipped these two like crazy), there was an excellent harmony between every topic discussed.
The only thing I didn't like was a kind of rushed ending. I would have liked some elements of the story to be discussed in depth at the end.
So... I'll start by saying that I have very mixed feelings about this book.
Let's begin with the positives:
- a really spooky atmosphere
- Jekyll's kinda cool :)) a very interesting character with a backstory
- Hyde's kinda cool too
- this quote - ‘“If he be Mr. Hyde,” he had thought, “I shall be Mr. Seek.”'
The negatives:
- I didn't get enough of Jekyll and Hyde. Instead I got more than enough of Mr. Utterson. He's just so bland and boring, I don't know...
- VEEEERYYY slow pacing, especially in the beginning. Nothing happens until the end. And considering it's a very short book it's weird and not okay for me.
- I guessed the plot twist from the beginning. It's not like it's a bad thing. It just took away from the story a little bit. And I think that the author could have tried to make it less obvious.
Iain Reid is a fucking genius and such a great author, y'all just dumb.
Seriously I can't even explain how much I enjoyed the book. But I think “enjoy” is a wrong word because I was super anxious the entire time. And it was worth it. Every second of it.
I will never be able to forget this book
It's perfect.
Don't get me wrong, I liked the book. I would even say that I really enjoyed the concept, but the execution... Not so much.
I felt like the plot had a potential, but it was kind of wasted. The villain could have been more interesting, but, unfortunately, I wasn't scared of him in the slightest.
Also the ending was anticlimactic. I would have enjoyed the book more if it was intense and shocking.
But I enjoyed the main character of the story - Alice. She was fierce and kind. I liked that you could not really tell if she's actually insane.
Overall I think that this whole series has a lot of potential and I am interested to know what is next.
