Ylva is facing the evil that took her husk and she has to decide whether to fight or run to fight another day.

Ylva finds herself untethered in the Veil and then attached to the man who took the wolves from the Academy. He brings her to the Forest of Illusion where she finds herself stuck until she solves the puzzle of the Forest only to end up with more than she bargained for in the process for freedom always has a price. Upon her the Academy, nothing returns to normal as once again Ylva faces yet another animal who decides she makes a nice lunch. She once again survives to find the world changed again for her and those around her as a time clock has been started and it is a race against time as lips are sealed, battles are fought and lost, and Ylva is once again standing alone in the darkness.

It is so hard not to give anything away (banging my head). I waited with lots of anticipation for this sequel and Arizona Tape did not disappoint with Valkyrie 102: How to become a Valkyrie her second book in “The Afterlife Academy” series. I got short of breath just typing the above because so much more happens and I want to tell you, but I cannot because I want to live to see the next book (laugh). Tape takes us on a whirlwind with Ylva and it is actually a good whirlwind for her character, not so much our hearts or her's, but for the character. Ylva is facing more than just the man that took her wolf, but her determination to be who she wants to be as she faces the battles on her own. In the first book, she was determined to find as many allies as possible and in this one she ends up fighting most of the battles on her own. Her relationship with Ryoko is a typical one for two teenagers, they share loving scenes and fight scenes. I love them together. Just like with LOL, we need to start an “Afterlife Academy” club because I need someone to discuss my theories with and I already have so many - Tape makes the series addicting and there is nothing more that a reader wants and hates and that is to crave the next book. I hope you are on this journey with me because Tape makes it worth the wait.

Valkyrie 201 is due out in September 2019, I will be trying to snoop around the Academy in the meantime...(ssshhh don't tell Arizona what I'm doing).

P.S. Did anyone catch what the guide in Forest of Illusions said to Ylva many times: “Remember, everything is an illusion,” that has stuck in my head and made me think this better not be a when Bobby wakes up dream. Just saying Arizona you have to show up at a conference sometime (laugh - just joking).

Kira went to give her report in person to get money owed to her and ended up in the middle of a robbery where her co-worker gets killed and her new employer gets shot and that is just the beginning of the case.

Kira Vance is a private-investigator who is partnered with an old-timer Ollie who threw some background work her way on a high-profile criminal case against a doctor accused of killing his wife. Kira finds evidence that his alibi might not be the most respectable or reliable guy to bank on. Kira goes to the defendant's lawyer's house to deliver the report and get paid when all of a sudden her partner is dead, she is getting shot at, and she can hear gun fire in the kitchen where she left the lawyer. The lawyer survives and hires Kira to replace her partner, but Kira has to retrace all of Ollie's steps because she has no clue what he had just unearthed that would “blow the whole case wide open”. She has to move fast though because the killer is looking too and not even the lawyer's security team might save her as bodies start to pile up and the clues keep leading to nowhere.

Laura Griffin gives readers a stimulating case in Her Deadly Secrets (2019) and even the good guys get hurt. Griffin gives readers an unsuspecting villain, clues that literally come out of nowhere, and a heroine that reminds me of VI Warshawski who I love. The mystery makes complete sense and the trail does not seem outlandish when it reaches it conclusion. The supporting cast is in it just enough, though I did get a bit confused on who was the bodyguards, but that could just be me with so many names. As for the romance story-line, it makes sense for the characters during the action, but I do not feel that there was enough of the nitty-gritty for the “love” word to be mentioned. I keep thinking of the ending of Speed (1994) where Annie says to Jack what if it just the chemistry and the adrenaline of the moment. The entire time Jeremy and Kira were together there was danger, so I think a slightly different ending would have been believable to me, but for die-hard romantics you will probably love the ending. Mystery lovers will love the ending too as it has enough bite and a puzzle to keep you involved.

Reacher stands at a “T” in the road, does he turn left and look at his unknown past or does he turn right and walk into unknown future - he takes a step left.

Jack Reacher is walking through New Hampshire when he sees a sign to a town where his father says he was born and curiosity makes him take that street into town. As he slogs his way through census records, police reports, and town records, he manages to find himself helping out a person or two which finds him in a bit of some hot water with some of the local “gangsters” and of course the police who want to keep their town quiet. There is another Reacher in town who has his own agenda and does not want Jack to have any part in it.

Did what I just write sound boring to you? Lee Child gave us 487 pages of this story in Past Tense, his 23rd Jack Reacher novel. I love the Reacher character and even he would say that this story dragged on too long. The search for the birthplace of his father was not that exciting nor was the resolution which was resolved (or was it) in the final chapter very quickly. As for Marc Reacher's storyline, this too was dragged out and we were told it was to psych out the participants of his game, but once again it was quickly solved in the last chapter. There was no real tension or excitement in the book. It was just a long roundabout as Jack went on his way again. Hopefully the next book brings some excitement to Jack's life again and to our's - see you in the next town.

One day she was doing her job and the next she had no memory of it or of herself until she heard another voice in her head saying someone had taken it all and they were going to get it back.

Kita has a dirty job, but someone has to keep the stupid rich people alive when they come to visit. A couple of arrows in her body later and they are there safely, unfortunately it is all an elaborate trap for her. A trap for a woman with no memory of who she used to be, scars all over her body that she has no idea where they came from, and things growing out of her that she cuts off her so no one will know that she is cursed. Now imprisoned by people she does not know for crimes she has no memory of committing, she wakes up with once again blank spots in her memory, but now a voice in her head telling her to break out of her new prison. The commander of the prison, one sexy Jessica Rabbitt, helps her escape the prison, but that is only the first obstacle in the race to find out who Kita really is before she is made to disappear forever.

As anyone who has read my reviews by now knows, this is not the typical genre for me, but it is one this year that I am really enjoying. L. Fergus kicks butt in Rebirth the first in the “Game of the Gods” series. Kita is a complex heroine and her posse is just as complex and is not left in the background. She befriends characters who are just as complicated as her and she does not even get along with all of them which provides great comic relief during this adventure which starts literally from the first sentence and ends at the last sentence (or does it). I do not want to give too much away as I hate reading reviews that have spoilers, but if you are looking for a space fantasy adventure - this is it. There is humor, fighting, blowing things up, and complex issues to deal with to round out the story. Kita is a heroine you want to follow into the next “Game” because no matter what she turns out to be, you know you will have good time getting there.

Imagine waking up dead with no clue who you are only to find out you have to save the universe.

A man wakes up in a different place than he went to sleep (he thinks), but has no memory of his name, his past, or how he got there. He is quickly assigned a guide, Levin, and then assigned a name: Neviq. It is quickly determined what species he has woken up as: a Husk who is one of the low people on the totem pole as he has no powers like the sorcerers or witches, he cannot turn into a dragon, he is not a shadow with no form, or any of the number of creatures which flood the universe he is now living in. He manages to stumble into new pathways and finds himself fighting battles he is ill equipped for while his subconscious deals with his death and what issues he has left behind. He is also new to this land of subterfuge and fighting that has been going on for longer than the Earth has existed and he has no clue who to believe or who to trust as everyone seems to have their own agenda.

Sylvia Correnaro has written an ambitious fantasy sci-fi tale in Tales from Kaltheria. The story is full of twists and turns and treachery is everywhere. Overall, the story is good. I think where it can get confusing is that there are a lot of the names that are very similar such as Naviq and Neviq for example. The editing is off too and sometimes Neviq is called another name by mistake, so you have to go back and make sure you are with the right character. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, I think an appendix at the back would be helpful especially since some characters have multiple names. The layout of the book is atrocious, but once you get used to it you can get past it. There is a good story here and die-hard fantasy readers will enjoy it.

Suketu Mehta writes an intimate look into the lives of immigrants and his own in This Land is Our Land: An Immigrant's Manifesto. The stories range from those in the United States and those who are struggling to find freedom from their oppressors. He tells the heartbreak of those whose dream is not to come to the United States, but to just survive. I think some of the most heartbreaking tales are the ones who were happy with their lives and were living their dreams only to become victims to others and have to lose their dream to come to the horror that is America. For some the United States is the ultimate dream and to others it is the dream they sell to their families while they struggle to just survive here. They are not people described on the news or out of some politicians' mouths - they just want to go back to living or to find a life worth living if not for them then for their children. This is a book that everyone should read, discuss, and share.

Talking about sperm brings ladies together in unexpected ways.

France's President Dominque Laroche is still making waves with her live-in lover and “First Lady” Steph two years after the election. Unfortunately, Steph is dealing with the issues of being First Lady and what her role is in Dominque's life as the Presidency takes dominance over everything. Dominque's political competition introduces a bill asking for fertility treatments to be allowed to everyone who wants it not just heterosexual married women. It is this conversation which introduces new people into Steph's life. Zola is a reporter who moved from Australia to be with her lover Camille and is suffering from not only homesickness but a feeling of displacement in France. Aurore is a radio show host who talks about sex and also helped write the bill. Then add in the ladies from Barbier & Cyr and drama is always bound to happen.

In French Kissing: Season Four, we get introduced to new ladies and different dramas by Harper Bliss. Zola's story is one that anyone who has ever moved to another country, or even vacationed in one for a long period of time, can relate to as she is a stranger to everything about France. She does not know the language nor do Parisians understand her when she asking for a “flat white”. (From my own experience just in the U.S., try moving from the North to the South and asking to go to the “bubbler” or asking for “jimmies”.) Zola is also working a job she does not fit into. Then when she is introduced by her girlfriend to all of her girlfriend's co-workers, Camille starts to get harassed at work for being a lesbian. This sounds like all heavy materials, but Bliss brings us humor with the Steph's relationship with Solange, Dominque's Chief of Staff. Their constant butting of heads is really quite funny. Yet, once again Bliss takes a character like Solange and puts a twist on her and makes her human. The character I relate to the most to out of this entire series is actually Aurore and not for her sexual exploits (laugh). Aurore is open about sexuality and the ramifications of it on multiple levels and this is something I have a tendency to get on my soapbox about and it made me laugh to see Bliss writing words that I have said so many times (damn, I am not as original as I thought). Bliss has the ability to balance the heavy topic and humor and it is illustrated nicely in this book. There's drama, humor, and yes thank goodness sex! There is even strap-on sex which was missing in the last book. Thank you Ms. Bliss. The sex is not as descriptive as in her other books, but there is enough sex to get an R rating here. The new ladies are great and it also fun to visit with the previous ladies. Paris and Bliss are a great match!

Can a woman find her a new path after the love of her life dies in a horrible accident in front of her?

Morgan Walker and her wife were vacationing in the mountains when they were attacked by a grizzly bear. Morgan's wife was killed in front of her and Morgan suffered life-threatening injuries. Two years later she still has not dealt with the aftermath even though she has tried therapy, alcohol, and in the early days talking with her friends. Now she just functions by writing screenplays, except now she has written THE story, the one where everyone was destroyed but for the movie screen she had to change it to a happy ending. Enter English actress Jenna Graham playing the part of her wife who has real life issues of her own back home which include a cheating boyfriend, a lying best friend, and a son staying with her parents. Jenna ends up staying in Morgan's guest house for the movie shoot and unexpected happiness is in the air or is that love?

The Long Journey Home by Kat Smith is a lovely romance with a slow burn which is satisfied with quick glimpses into what could be. Smith has written a great supporting cast for Morgan in her unlikely best friends: her producer and business partner who has a cheating husband, a pop star whose husband gambles and refuses to work, and a drug addicted dancer on the pop star's tour. All of their stories are included within Journey and only one of them is (well two) is bisexual. Amazingly enough though, when Morgan dissolves during the bear accident and later, they are all there for her and she is there for them. The Journey is not just about Morgan and Jenna's journey, but the path of friendship and the twists and turns it can take. Smith writes all of these characters as very human which means they mess up and are not perfect - just like real life. The core of Journey is Morgan and Smith does justice to her and their story. At the end there are some quick resolutions to other problems that do not involve Morgan that I felt that I missed out on getting to see which bummed me out because I felt that Smith had me there all along to witness everything else but their happy ending. We do get to see Morgan's happy ending and she is our heroine and the Journey is worth it.

An outlaw and a space ranger join forces on a secret mission to save the President.

Former Space Ranger and Space Pirate Salishan Bransen has been keeping a low profile until a gorgeous lady walks into a bar (sound like a familiar tale?). Sal falls for the bait and before she knows it, she is being offered a deal by the Space Rangers to rescue the kidnapped President with none other than the gorgeous lady herself, Space Ranger Jade Hamilton. Immediately everything starts to go wrong on this secret mission and Sal and Jade find themselves in one predicament after another. If they are not fighting for their lives then they are fighting the sexual attraction between them which is on a constant burn. Sal had an itchy feeling though and just before everything turned to shit she sent out a beacon to Catwoman and her gal Catherine - will they answer and if they do will they be able to rescue Sal and Jade in time?

This was such a fun read and I actually put this book ahead of my other “must” reads for the week because it is a KC Luck book and it is the sequel to a book a just reviewed and here we have Save Her Heart. I have to admit I was looking forward to who Luck would write to partner up with Sal as I fell in love with her character in Rescue Her Heart. Jade Hamilton is a strong-willed character and is nothing like Catherine who Sal fell a little in love with in Rescue. I do not want to give away Sal and Jade's story so I will say that I was really happy with how everything turned out. Luck keeps the action moving in the story and to say the surprises kept coming is an understatement. I kept expecting one thing and Luck threw something else at me. I loved it! It was great being with Nat and Catherine again and watching how their relationship has grown and changed and how it changed again during the story. I love Nat and Sal's relationship. Let's just say that I love the trio together and they really work and I cannot wait to go on further adventures with them (hint, hint Ms. Luck). I am so glad I put this book to the head of my reading list and you should too. Save Her Heart is a must read.

A woman starting over falls for her professor, but sometimes you cannot outrun your mistakes.

Lex Daniels is on the run again. She is on the run from her life, her bills, and the mistakes she keeps making over and over again. This time though she is going to follow through because she has a plan so that her next escape plan will be foolproof. Her sister lets her stay rent free in her apartment while Lex gets her GED at the local college while her mother pays the minimum on her bills. Lex only needs a couple of credits, so she will not be staying long which suits her fine as she likes to keep on the move. As she's moving on campus she runs right into Professor Abigail Keyes and she presses all of the right buttons for Lex. Abigail is older though and is dealing with her own life issues, but the freshness for life that Lex has is revitalizing Abigail. The road for them would not be easy if they gave in to temptation, but can they both Learn to Love before Lex's mistakes catch up with her?

Sienna Waters does not shy away from the chance that we may not like Lex in Learn to Love. Lex is twenty-eight-years-old and still growing up as she has never had a desire to until her mistakes get so huge she might not have a choice. Waters writes a character that is like some women today, I met some of them in school. Watching Lex's growth and her interaction with her family and the changes that result are real; Waters does not create a false reality for readers to create a happy ending. I think this is what made me root so hard for Lex and Abigail, despite the hardships they both help each other grow as individuals. They both teach each other. Waters does not create a one way street in their relationship for which I am grateful and I enjoyed reading. I make this sound like a very serious book, but there are very funny moments and the book is a good fun read that just happens to cover heavy topics. There is some sex (yay!), but it definitely did not happen the way I thought it was going to happen or the way Lex thought it was going to happen (laugh). Waters makes you want to go back to school, even if only to watch Abigail walk down the hallway.

Waking up in a world of ice you created is just the beginning for Lil.

Lil used to be meek, mild, and tried to please everyone. Now she has the power to throw ice knives at people to including one of the fastest people on earth who just happens to be one of her friends (oops). Her increasing control in her powers is having side effects in her personal life too as she desires to control other parts of her life too when she sees a pretty lady jogging towards her. She is on a stake out though as she has agreed to Gale's, the woman who infected her with super powers, plan to destroy the building and chemicals that created and destroyed the previous specimens (meaning the women before her who were killed or who barely survived like Gale). Harmony's presence though might be just what Lil needs as the physical chemistry between them heats up the ice burning through Lil.

I have mentioned before that I love the League of Lesbians by Jea Hawkins and Em Stevens? League of Lesbians: Lil is third in the series and as the authors warned not everyone in the League is going to be a hero, but Lil's fate is not determined here. Hawkins does show the struggle that Lil has with her new superpowers and the changes they bring to her life and her personality. Just as any comic hero the struggle between good and evil is complicated as what Gale is saying makes complete sense and when Lil confesses part of the story to Harmony, what Harm says in return makes sense. When everyone is making sense, what is a girl with superpowers to do especially when she sees what has happened to everyone. Hawkins writes a relatable character who is struggling with her path and who she wants to be and then leaves us with a cliffhanger! I am not even sure who the bad guy is in the end - so exciting!!! There is some sex in the book, but it is very PG...maybe PG-13. The story is fabulous though and I cannot wait for LOL4. If you have not started this series, now is the time to get caught up. I reached out to the authors to find out when the release date is for LOL4 is and did not get a response, so you have time to get caught up. Join the League!! You will not regret it.

Paris changes from the “City for Lovers” to the “City of Betrayers”.

President Dominique Laroche has a year left to her candidacy and everyone is assuming that she is going to run again except the President herself. When she shares her doubts with Solange, her Chief of Staff, and her partner Steph, a partner in Barber & Cyr the President's PR firm, she gets completely opposite reactions. Solange responds typically as she has given her life and her relationship with Aurore to give her best to her position and Dominique. Solange has to rethink her entire life, but before she can take her next breath there is a leak and it comes from an unexpected source. Everyone is surprised when Dominque's private thoughts end up in a Socialist's hands to do with what she will. The betrayal ends up affecting everyone from the new relationships formed to old relationships at Barber & Cyr. What does Dominque decide? Whose relationship survives the betrayal? Then Sybille joins the Socialist campaign and throws more fuel on the fire by sharing secrets she learned at Barber & Cyr. Can Dominque and Steph's relationship survive the stress and the press under fire?

Harper Bliss can create the drama and she does in French Kissing: Season Five. Writing the above was recreating the stress for me that reading it did and I know the ending (laugh). There is a lot going on in this book and it makes for an exciting read, but...and there is actually a “but” here. I think some emotions could have been made clearer with a paragraph or less of information, for example Claire and Margot have a sexual dominance relationship. Margot realizes at one point that she has been neglecting Claire in this area, but I think for people who are not experienced with this type of relationship they may not realize why Claire and Margot need this and how it helps them individually and as a couple. This was mentioned in a previous book, but in the situation that develops in this book an explanation would actually help people to understand this type of relationship in a healthy way - an opportunity missed. This book also felt a bit rushed though it takes place over a length of time to show that decisions and events were not made over night, the impact of the betrayal between a particular couple that was heading one way and then ended up going the complete opposite way - no mention of how they're relationship survived that year when they literally were reliving all of their previous problems and having lost even more time. This book was exciting for it's drama and Bliss writes emotion filled sex scenes. I loved being in Paris again and cannot wait to see what Bliss has in store for us again next time.

A relaxing road trip turns to terror as a serial killer decides to make her next.

Marsha Taylor hits the road with no real destination in mind other than away from her life as it is imploding on her. Almost immediately she meets a fellow traveler, Jessie, who needs a lift as she has been hitchhiking and is running into pervert trouble. Jessie is a breath of fresh air with her youth and laughter minus the bursts of fear and lies she spouts almost every time you ask her a personal question. Taylor is letting it go though, because she is not a cop anymore and Jessie is not a PI case. It is not until a series of incidents happen which strand the ladies with no car, no assistance, and no idea what is going on that Taylor starts to demand the truth. In the meantime the local cops are chasing a serial killer who may or may not be working within their department. Just who is tracking the ladies? Someone from Jessie's past? Someone from Marsha's cases? Or the serial killer? Or something worse?

Barbara Winkes makes Secrets a gripping suspense book that you do not want to put down until you know who the killer is and whether everyone is going to live. Winkles keeps us guessing throughout the book even though she shares the thoughts of the killer, we have no clue as to the identity until the cops do which is great. The relationship between Marsha and Jessie is not rushed and it could be as both characters are going through a vulnerable time in their own lives, but Winkles gives these characters a chance and it is nice. There are some surprises from the past and one that is really surprising and it adds depth to Marsha's character where she has self-doubt. There is action, terror, and a build-up as to whether anybody is going to save the day. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read and I recommend it for your beach read list.

Welcome to The Afterlife Academy where young minds are taught everything they need to know about death.

All of her life, Ylva has dreamed of becoming a Valkyrie and attending The Afterlife Academy. Unfortunately she does not come from a wealthy background or a noble lineage and the only other person from her county attending the Academy is her arch-nemesis. She is then further isolated by being roomed with a Dragon, Ryoko, due to a shortage of beds so the mixing of the different breeds is necessary. She is then beset with an overly friendly wood elf, Aellyn, who dreams of becoming the impossible: a Valkyrie. Then there is Ylva herself who seems to find trouble wherever she travels and drags her new acquaintances along for the ride. The Academy is very much like high school where there a cliques, troublemakers, and mean girls. Apparently though in Ylva's desire to become a Valkyrie she forgot to read the fine print: she has to die to become one.

I do not want to give too much away in Arizona Tape's Valkyrie 101: How to become a Valkyrie the first in “The Afterlife Academy” series as it is just under 200 pages. Tape packs a lot of information and a lot of action for a short story. There is more than one mystery and subterfuge involved in Ylva's first year. Tape has written Ylva as a strong character who is also very young in some areas, but that is due to the lack of life experience. Ylva bases all of her knowledge off of her mother's stories and her own isolated existence. The relationship between Ryoko and her is as much a surprise to Ylva as to Ryoko that Ylva does not know that she is one (laugh). The confusion of young adulthood and miscommunication based on preconceived notions and ideas of what someone else knows and has experienced is dominant in this story. Aellyn has no clue that she can never become a Valkyrie or can she become one? Ryoko knows that she is a lesbian who has started a relationship with her roommate because she has been courting her or has she just been a good friend? Ylva's goal is to become a Valkyrie at any cost, even friends, or has she had a change in heart now that she has had her heart stirred for the first time? I cannot wait to have all of these questions answered and Tape has written the beginning of a story that I want to follow, so I enroll me into The Afterlife Academy because Tape is guaranteed to take us on a ride.

A medical study turns out to be a lot more than one man expects.

Jacob is a struggling to make his bills and signs up for a medical study that is paying $15,000 for a week's worth of time. He signs on the dotted line without reading the fine print. He takes the physical, gets the shot, and luxuriates in the fancy suite. Then he meets his roommate, she is beautiful and hates him on sight. Seven days. When he wakes up the next morning, things are not quite as they seem as Jacob is no longer a man and his roommate is no longer a woman.

As this is a novella, I do not want to give a lot away in DL Savage's Trans-Form: First Time Feminization, but obviously you have to suspend logic and time. The transformations are right on spot, but the reactions happen swiftly and I think this is due to the fact that this is a novella. I do wish that there had been a page or two dedicated to the decisions made at the end of the story to explain what was decided in a better way, but overall it is not bad for a novella. The sex is pretty simple, though the fellatio is described better than the cunnilingus. If you are looking for a transgender story, this is not it. It does make a nice sex feminization fantasy story.

League of Lesbians: Frankie #2 - 3 Stars

What is a lady to do when she can hear a heartbeat across the room? Poker, of course.

Struggling to deal with her new super power, Frankie has lost her job and is slowly losing her mind as she hears everything going on in the world around her. Slowly, our villain Gale, teaches Frankie how to filter and control the chaos of sound around her. Now with her life in shambles and no money, Gale gives Frankie the suggestion of hitting the casinos where Frankie discovers she can uncover the tells of poker players. She also discovers that she has a smoother technique with the ladies too. Soon though the stakes get higher as Frankie gets known in the casinos and Rose gets involved. Gale has another suggestion which might just get everyone imprisoned or killed.

I am still in love with these ladies and no one has made this into a geek club yet - I am so disappointed. Em Stevens and Jea Hawkins are writing flawed and real lesbian superheroes in League of Lesbians: Frankie. Frankie is a womanizer who has seemingly always had it easy. Now she is given a superpower that she has to struggle to control and has to make choices as to whether she wants to take the easy road or the harder road. Luckily for us, there is a girl. (laugh) So not only do we get superhero action, we get romance too. I loved this book and I think you will too, you can read this as a standalone, but I do not recommend that as you might understand all of the ladies involved if you read Origins first. I am not going to write much more as this is a short book and I do not want to give anything away other than there is action, romance, lesbians, and good writing and you cannot ask for more than that.

Can a notorious lesbian womanizer and a straight woman just be friends?

Macon Greene has the reputation of being a love' em and leave ‘em kind of woman among her friends. In reality, she is a protege violinist who does not like to call attention to herself and though she likes the ladies, she is choosy about her partners. Lately she has been hanging out with Joanna Mason, the only straight woman, in her group of friends. At first she was attracted to Joanna until she found out she was straight and now they are just friends. Joanna has had some bad dates and relationships, but still turns away from any lesbian who hits on her. They have a lot in common and see each almost every day until their friends make them confront their nonexistent feelings for each other - or are they nonexistent? It is not until their friends keep saying that they have feelings for each other do they start to wonder, do they?

Nicole Pyland takes us on a nice journey with Macon and Joanna in Macon's Heart. We get to see their friendship grow deeper before they even have to question whether there is something more to their feelings. This is actually the first book this year that actually deals directly with a straight girl contemplating having sex for the first time with a woman and the feelings that go along with the idea and the decision. I applaud Pyland for this as I have found this to be lacking in every book I have read this year. Pyland also deals with a constant issue in friend groups and that is perceptions and blind statements and it is dealt with sensitivity and reality. I love Macon and Joanna's friendship as sometimes it takes an “outsider” to really see who someone is and Joanna sees Macon. What I like about Pyland's writing is the reality she infuses within her storyline from the taste of a woman to the conversation between friends when one of them realizes they have hurt the other. There is laughter, bang your head moments, and of course sex (good sex too) in Macon's Heart and Pyland's realism is a fabulous dose of reality I want to read all the time.

Paris is a busy place for the couples as one set seem ready to move on and two seem to settle into domesticity, but the key word here is “seem” as all is not as it seems.

Six months have passed since Dominque and Steph went viral and life is definitely different under a microscope for Steph. She is not only in a relationship and in love for the first time, but she did not pick an easy road as a politician's girlfriend who is running for election. The schedule is demanding and the violation of privacy is intrusive. Steph is drowning in Dominque's life and is wondering if she made the right choices as she struggles to remain true to who she is or was. The same struggle can be seen in Juliette as she chases her baby dream, the winning of the election for Dominque, and the idea that Nadia and her have gotten past all of the trauma in the last year. Margot, herself, is looking for the person she used to be after physically recovering from her accident. She finds herself in an unusual situation of being Claire's sole support system when Claire's secret comes out with devastating effects on the people around her.

Holy sugar, Harper Bliss does it again in French Kissing: Season Three by bringing the scandals and the sex to Paris. I do not want to give too much away as once again Bliss packs a lot in her books. There are different types of dramas this time around, but all with the same idea of which I did not really notice until I was writing this and that is remaining true to who you are. Bliss gives us three completely different situations where women get lost in that we can all relate to if we have not been in the situation ourselves then we know someone and she shows the struggle of finding oneself again. She throws in some sex scenes, though not as many as in her previous books in this series and that is probably due to the nature of the story-lines. This book is a bit heavier in the emotions than the previous books in this series, but it is fitting and it is good. A couple or maybe two do not move onto Season Four so will they get their “happy ending” - guess you will have to read and find out (laugh).

A young Amish mother appears on Mel and Dana's doorstep with her week-old baby running from secrets.

Hannah brings Katie and her newborn son, Jef, to the Crane doorstep in the middle of the night looking for help. Katie at seventeen-years-old has been shunned from her Amish community for having sex as they do not believe her claims of rape. She showed up at Hannah's door pregnant, alone, and knowing no one else from the Amish community living in the English world. Hannah and Katie grew up together so of course Hannah takes her in. It is not long though before Katie feels that her trouble has followed her there as she feels eyes on her and sees shadows outside the house. Afraid that the baby's father, her rapist, has followed her, Hannah brings her to Sheriff Mel Crane for help. Mel and Dana take her in and immediately start to see to her needs: where is she going to live, financial, school, and employment. It is during one of these excursions to set Katie up for assistance that she disappears while Hannah is watching the baby in the car. Sheriff Crane immediately sets up a search party not sure whether she is looking for a runaway teenage girl or something worse.

Anne Hagan brings a sad reality to Hannah's Hope which unfortunately echoes today's headlines. This story deals with multiple rapes, incest, teenage pregnancy, homelessness, and the predators who are looking for these young girls. I mention these subjects as they can be triggers for some people and I want to give readers a heads up. Hagan deals with everything factually and there are no deep emotional scenes regarding these events, but I felt it fair to warn everyone as a trigger can be anything. It is this detachment which enables you to process the mystery quickly and this is the first time we really do not know who the bad guy is right away which is really nice. At the same time Hagan also gives Dana a case from the Young agency which really tests the character which if you are handicapped (as I am), it is an illuminating moment. This book concentrates on the mystery of Katie and gives the character the respect the story should get by not distracting readers with other storylines as Hagan is known for writing a lot of different ideas which carry out into other books. I actually like this book more for that reason as Katie and everyone else affected deserves the attention to be just on them. It is my hope that you like this too.

A professor struggles with his desire for a student who makes no issue with his desire for him.

It is the first day of college and Professor Foster Haraday is struggling to deal with the divorce papers his wife just sent him. His feelings of failure and isolation are overwhelming as this was the first time he took a chance on someone and came out of his shell to get married and try to make it a success. Looking up from his papers he sees Justin Molina and immediately feels a connection. Justin is not like the other students as he is older, full of tattoos, and the poetry he writes for Haraday's class moves him to the point that he keeps after Justin to write. Justin has his own secrets and is battling just to survive as he is working three jobs in which he keeps running into the handsome Professor that he cannot seem to take his eyes off of. When circumstances have Haraday hiring Justin to work in his home, the attraction becomes even more intense but Justin is Haraday's student and then the Professor finds out what else Justin is hiding.

This story is a great romance where two people who both are caretakers find each other and without the desire to use or hurt, come together to heal each other. Felice Stevens writes a sensitive romance in Broken Silence the first book in the “Rock Bottom” series. The story takes place over a semester and half and allows the characters to grow from the experience of just being with each other and most of the time it is without the sex clouding the issue. She gives the characters time to come into their own so that they can become healthy partners for each other, but keeps the steam up with hot kisses and passion. The sex is good and worth the wait. I will admit that some of the supporting characters react to some situations in a way that does not make sense to me, but I have to assume they react this way because it will be explained in a future book. Overall, this is a great romance.

Hired to find a missing girl, Gloria is led to a dangerous predator who has been making girls disappear for a long time and Gloria is next.

Gloria Morris is the best kind of private eye: she is easy on the eyes, has a way with the ladies, and leaves every either happy or dead. She works for a lawyer who does not mind the blurring of the lines especially since the next case he sends her on is a missing girl, Susie Mae, who sells her time for dates, sex, and parties. Her roommate and lover, Clarissa, has begged for help and has already threatened one of the pimps with an ice pick in a friendly exchange. Unbeknownst everyone, Susie Mae decided to add blackmail to her repertoire and everyone is looking for the evidence and is willing to kill to make sure no one else gets it. Gloria chases the leads which lead to devine food tastings, old friends, new friends, and the murderer. The question now for Gloria is how far is she willing to go to get the confession?

I loved Out of Control by G.R. Browda. I think I would have loved it just for the language alone, Browda states in her Goodreads profile that she writes in “hardboiled colloquial American English” and it works. The novel reads as a mix of the old gumshoe novels set in today's world, but with an elegance of language that if you love words will get you wet - sorry for the graphic word but it is true. She took the word “gay” back to what it used to mean (multiple times) and this is something I have been saying we need to do as writers. She also described a sex scene in a way I have NEVER read a sex scene before and I will admit it flummoxed me and she never wrote the same type of sex scene twice. She is heavily descriptive in her writing to where you can visualize the wallpaper, which is something I do not normally like to read in excess but once again - the language. Browda has seduced me with her turn of a word and phrase.

Now let's talk about the story and we have yet another hit. Gloria Morris is a private eye that I want to question me (pretty please). This is a gumshoe I will follow on any mystery she wants to investigate. She is tough, caring, funny, and she gets the ladies and the ladies still like her afterwards. The secondary characters are unique and fun and are a great setup if Browda decides to take Morris further (which I hope she does). The mystery itself was solid and fit the old style mystery set in today's world. According to Goodreads, this is Browda's first book and if it is she knocked it out of the park because I want more. I especially want more of Morris, but I have faith that whatever she comes up will be just as fascinating and lovely to read. I highly recommend this book - especially for Book Clubs as once again the language here is just lovely to read.

I talk a lot about the language in this book because it is usually the writers who have a unique style or turn of phrase that I remember. Lass Small had a very distinctive style as it was abrupt and short and simple in its complexity. I read every book. Jennifer Fulton was the first lesbian author I ever read and it was her style that kept me reading the genre that was very limited at the time. Karin Kallmaker is another author, I always recommend. Octavia Butler's Kindred is the book I send everyone. I could keep going on, but hopefully you get my point. I love words, and Browda won my heart with her words. (Sigh, I am so easy.)

An alpha comes asking for help when her captain disrupts the negotiations by trying to mate the other pack's captain.

Sex is on the mind of multiple people in L.L. Raand's Rogue Hunt. I will not say much as this is a novella and most of the action that takes place in this story revolves around the couples and whether they will or will not have sex. Alpha Sylvan Mir makes up for lost time with her mate while dealing with council and deciding whether to help Snow Crest Alpha Zora Constantine. In the meantime, both of their captains cannot keep away from each other as their attraction builds with each contact. There is also the attraction between Alpha Zora and a trainer for the Weres. Then there is question as to what exactly will everyone be fighting if they decide to form an alliance with the Snow Crest as even their Alpha cannot accurately describe the danger that awaits them.

Let me just say that the sex is quick (laugh), maybe because it is a novella but these shifters do not require much in foreplay nor in actual action. I did like the chemistry between Ash and Jace, but I think I would have like more communication but once again this is a novella so it is just a bridge to another book. I enjoyed this quick glimpse into the “Midnight Hunters” series and I have to say it makes curious to read some of the other novels. Stay tuned as one is bound to appear here soon!

Book Club is just supposed to be about books right? Then how come these six readers wake up after book club talking about something other than books?

Wren leads a monthly Book Club of six women (including her). They meet every month at a coffee shop central for everybody when one month they arrive to find that their meeting room has been rented to someone else. Frustrated and angry the ladies get ready to leave when a sexy lady in red heels steps in to save the day. Gale is house-sitting for her boss and is bored, lonely, and would love the company. The ladies after some debate take Gale up on her offer and soon they are getting in Gale's van and driving off to a gorgeous house in a suburban neighborhood. Gale starts pouring drinks, everyone is chatting about the book, and soon everyone is feeling the effects of the drinks. The next morning everyone wakes up in their own beds with no memory of the night before, but feeling slightly different.

I have to confess that I bought this book because of the cover without even reading the blurb (laugh). I just loved the cover and thought it was unique and anybody who picked such a unique cover had to have a story that was just as unique and I was right. Authors Em Stevens and Jea Hawkins and the League of Lesbians: Origins is the superhero book I have been waiting for, though the authors state that not every character is going to be a hero (hmmmmm). I interacted with the authors on Twitter and Hawkins credits Stevens for picking out the cover and it worked because I bought it. The story dragged me in and I already have my favorites and once I read that not everyone is going to be a hero - my heart stopped. I think we need to make a fan club, a board to talk about theories...and I am geeking out. The authors did what writers do best, they made me care about the characters and want to continue on their journey with them. I cannot wait for the next book (which I already bought as I got them both at the same time (laugh)). I hope you join me on this adventure and geek out with me, because this looks like a fun ride - I hope they make t-shirts because I so want to be heroine in the League of Lesbians. Just saying (hint).

Can a strip club owner and a dancer find happiness when one keeps getting accused of murder and the other is a murderer?

Cordelia is settling in to her role dancing at Mallory's strip club when she accepts a date with a cop who will not take “no” for an answer. In heat and being stalked by a crazy cop is only the beginning for Cordelia, but luckily for her Mallory steps in when she is attacked on stage. Mallory does not date or do long-term relationships, but she is in heat too and she and her coyote have an itch for Cordelia. Trouble keeps the pair on their toes as they are being attacked on all fronts as Mallory is being accused of murders she did not commit though someone keeps setting her up. Cordelia is running from secrets from her past, the crazy stalker, secrets she is learning in her new town, and people who keep trying to kill her. To add to all of the craziness, there is not just one serial killer in town who is trying to keep hidden and keep killing too.

Serenity Snow knows how to pack a mystery and let me tell you Cordelia falls into a lot mysteries (laugh) in Catching a Coyote. Snow writes an interesting character with Cordelia as not only is she running from a mysterious past, but she has amazing powers and shifting capabilities. Her ability to compartmentalize is astounding with everything that is thrown at her within the story and though I do not understand her choices sometimes, she at least does (laugh). Snow creates great chemistry between Mallory and Cordelia and their first full-blown sex scene is everything a reader could want in a sex scene. Unfortunately, it takes place early in the book and there really is not much after that. I personally would have liked more sex as with all of the talking in the beginning of the book about all of the sex, it would have been nice if the story backed it up. All talk - no action (laugh). I do like the story though and would definitely read another Snow book and I recommend this one.

When we saw the ladies last the ballyhoo had hit the fan and the fan is still spinning.

A month after scandal breaks in Season One the repercussions on a political scale on quieting down, but not on an emotional scale for the ladies. Stephanie is back on her path of mindless gratification with no satisfaction either on the job or in her personal life. In an attempt to get her life by on track she comes up with a diabolical plan to challenge a new political opponent against Dominique who may have ties to a previous ex-lover of one of the ladies. Juliette and Nadia are focusing on their relationship since the engagement only to have a heart-rending visitor from Juliette's past walk through her office door. One who seemingly will not take “No” for an answer as they appear again and again in various forms. This impact vibrates not only through her choices at work, but her choices at home where previous decisions are second-guessed and new roads are paved and everyone is dragged along for the ride. Claire seems to be a silent partner as she cannot stop reeling from Margot's betrayal and the rollercoaster of getting back together and breaking up takes a toll on everyone. Then Nadia's one-night mistake moves into the city and the hospital and this has consequences that no one saw coming as everyone takes positions they would have never taken before.

It is actually harder to write a description about a book without giving away any spoilers when you have so many characters and Harper Bliss packs a lot of situations in French Kissing: Season Two. You definitely have to read Season One to truly understand Season Two. Bliss does not solve any of the mysteries from Season One and instead gives us new ones which complicates the relationships further and you really do not know who or what to root for in the situations. This makes for excellent writing. When a reader struggles with the situation just as the character does that means we are invested and nothing can be better than that. I do not want to give anything specifically away, but there is some good sex in Season Two. There are also some heart wrenching scenes. (laugh) There are also scenes where you might want to bitch slap a character or two. I cannot wait to read Season Three - see you Paris!
