This was a brutal read, some bits were hard to digest...but overall I enjoyed it and would recommend.

Holy monkey this book was intense. I was left slack jawed and amazed at this ending!! I still can't believe it.

Great for lovers of the Hunger Games and Maze Runner. Unfortunately for me though my ride ends here. I am so angry at how this one ended that I dont think I have it in me to continue. But we'll see.

This is such a great and innovative series, Ms. McGuire has taken falling down the rabbit hole to a whole other level. So much to enjoy and the series continues to get better!

I predict this will be the best YA book I read this year! Intensely satisfying, the best fairy tale based book I've read in ages. I eagerly await Tales of the Hinterlands!!

Take away the childhood nightmares and the locales and you've got a story I've read before.

There were a few gems in this one, a couple that were relatable, a few jaw droppers, and some that even made you feel like a dirty pretty thing.

Overall a worthy read, one I challenge you to read aloud...

I cannot begin to tell y'all how much I enjoyed this novel! I mostly listened to Will Wheaton narrate because I was having trouble getting into it. Once I started listening to Will though I couldn't stop! It was fast-paced, clever, and thoroughly enjoyable. I loved everything about this book. The 80s throw back, the characters, the highly emersive environments, the challenges...it was full of action and adventure and took to me place I could see myself living in (not that Id want to)... Overall cannot recommend enough.

It's taken me literal days to review this book... It didn't quite fall into any one category, but held bits of thriller, suspense, and horror. Overall, it was a story about reminiscing, about the power an item holds over you. Much of the book reminded me in style of Stephen King's It, a group of children coming together one summer who experience something gruesome, and the effects of which still hold onto them in their futures. Nothing is ever what it appears to be in this read, you kinda just have to hang on for the ride.

One of the very best juvenile books I have EVER read! Clever and witty, with nonstop adventure, I could not put it down! I cannot wait for the release of The First (Endling #2)!!!

This made me so sad for the state of the world, its truth is poignant, and as she warns you in the start, it's time for some self care.

Ok so, yea, I read this. Did I enjoy it? Not particularly. I can't blame the read on this one though.

Hope. Hope was an intrinsic theme in this read, that should have inspired a fire in my belly, but I really just couldn't get into it. It was almost an unfinished but I wanted so badly to be proven wrong that I trucked my way through it.

If you like mystery, suspense, and a lil Christian romance, go ahead and give this a try, it might just successfully stir in you what it failed to in me.

This book has a great mystery, well conceived and delivered with a thoughtful hand. I fell hard for these bookish characters in a way I hadn't in a long time. They were quirky and clever, and you were with the 100% throughout the story. So why the 3 star review?... Well, I had the hardest time trying to get into this one, the way the author slips from present to past was often hard to follow, and honestly I considered giving up on it multiple times...but then, Joey's letters appeared, and dammit I was hooked. Thankful I finished it. Hope the rest of you enjoy it.

I really enjoyed the mystery in this one. It's a definite cringe-worthy read, full of horror and betrayal. I couldn't believe some of the things I read, and yet believe in its truth. Murder for money, I wish I could believe that it wasn't the fact that the Osage were American(ized) Indians, and that it was purely for financial gain that hundreds were slaughtered for their oil rights, but let us be honest...If they hadn't been Indian, if they hadn't been thought to be less than human, than perhaps...

After reading several reviews for this book, I was a bit unsure of this read. It's one I've had on my TBR forever and as it was coming up in our Library Book Club, the first of the year...I couldn't resist. I dove in not really knowing what to expect, and was surprised and relieved by the feels I experienced during and even after (during my reflection) the book. I would highly suggest this book to anyone wanting to reflect on life's purpose, I would further not suggest this to someone who does not recognize the simple joys in life. Many of the negative reviews I read here on goodreads completely missed the mark on this one, I found them cynical, and completely unrealized. Like a man in a desert whose had a vision and chooses not to find his treasure.

great read very informative

Slow starter. Found it difficult to get into, there were moments I thought the author was trying to hard. Too disconnected, too gruesome, but it rolled out nicely, and by the end was definitely worth it. Will read book 2.

k so my expectations.. i really just want to get through this book and be like you go girl..it's about fucking time.. 1200+ worth of my damn time..but ya know overall just yes that was worth it. let's see.


K well. Finally finished, and by finally I mean FINALLY! When it comes to YA sometimes I feel like I'm really just too old for this shit... When it came to the Mara Dyer series, I definitely felt that way, fortunately for me Michelle Hodkin turned out to be a fantastic story teller. She's not the typical happily ever after author, she's the kind that takes a hold of you and doesn't let go till the very final page...my heart is still racing.

It's incredible! I genuinely disliked Mara Dyer, fell head over heels for Noah Shaw, laughed out loud at Jamie, the characters have depth and deal with uncommon struggles. Every time Hodkin gives you a second of happiness (just enough to get your blood pumping) she steals it away (some of the most intense scenes)! Not cool.

Finally, it takes the trilogy to bring it all together. If you do not read all three, you have no idea what you are missing out on. It was worth it, reading the Retribution brings it around full circle, answers all those nagging questions and solidifies my appreciation of Hodkin. I am actively looking forward to the start of the Noah Shaw trilogy due out this November.
