I saw this movie before reading the book. Usually, it is the other way around. I'm not sure if it colored my opinion of the book, but this may be the rare case where I liked the movie more than the book. I read this in digital format and the small asides were at the end of the chapter. This is much easier done in a traditional book (use a second bookmark) it is much more timeconsuming in digital form. It took me away from the story. I would have preferred parenthesis directly after the word. I also think the glamour and opulence shown in the film really captures the setting better than the book.
This book took me back to my childhood! While written for young adults, this 45 year old had no qualms enjoying this read. It took a chapter to get the Thra lingo down, but I didn't mind. To me this is part of a fantasy world. Just watched the first episode of the Netflix series and they explained the terms well. I found the glossary at the back of the book after finishing! I wish it had been at the front of the book along with the map of Thra. I will be reading the rest of the series if I can get my hands on it.
3 1/2 stars rounded up.
This was recommended to me because it was supposed to have a “Stranger Things” vibe. While it does have some similarities (takes place in the 80's, written from a child's viewpoint), it didn't quite hit the mark on the paranormal. Despite this, the writing was solid and the story was told well. I think the recommendation clouded my experience.
I did enjoy the references to Canadian pop culture of summer in the 80's.
DNF. I very rarely stop reading a book before the end. But I just didn't want to waste anymore time on it. I feel that this isn't necessarily a bad book, but more that it just was not my kind of writing style. I stopped a third of the way through the book and didn't feel that we got any further in the plot. Or that there was any. It's to bad. I liked the premise of the book.
3 1/2 stars. Really wanted to give this a higher rating. The book started as a solid four and continued for the first 2/3 of the book. Then, the book just lost me with the crazy world. I had a hard time picturing what the author was describing and found it confusing (maybe what the author intended?). I will read the sequel when it comes out.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
I'm not sure how to describe the first half of the book. It wasn't unputdownable but it wasn't boring either. It seems like the author was laying the groundwork for the second half of the book. Around the middle of the book, the whole book changes. The author starts showing her hand. And it has some good twists. I couldn't stop reading.
