While Gwen was an intriguing character and kept my interest, the book itself was unabashedly moral in tone but couldn't figure out what message it meant to send. In one part one thing would be broadly hinted only to be outright contradicted in a subsequent chapter. A lot of talk about God and Christianity but no portrayal of what Christianity is even about. A parson who takes one excuse after another to not “share theology” with those around him, but who moans at night over their lack of faith.
In the end the message just seemed to be one of “true love is better than everything and is the real manifestation of God” but because of the abstractness of the writing I couldn't even be sure of that.
