Really fun middle grade about the effects of minor homophobia and “helicopter parents”. Story was super quick to read and had me gripped the entire time. I absolutely loved the representations of multiple LGBTQIA+ characters.
Thank you to Random House Children's, Knopf Books for Young Readers, and NetGalley for providing me with an eBook copy to review.
I wish I had children so they could read this book. This arrived just in the right moment for it to mean so much.
There were three, mostly parallel, stories in the same book. Each was interesting, but I definitely wanted more of Donovan's and of “The Adventurers”. I'd read the whole book of “The Adventurers” (please David Levithan!).
The third story was the weakest, as the kids seemed both very young and much older at the same time.
Overall the whole book is about banned books and does a pretty good job on the nuances. However, Donovan's parents' change of heart was sudden and not fully explained.
